This was a great project. I enjoyed finishing the wood and assembling the electronics. Helped me gain a better understanding of guitars. I will be buying another, most likely a Tele.

I really enjoyed putting everything together. Shipping was super fast received my kit within 24 hrs of ordering. Most of the wiring was already completed, just had to connect the switch, the jack and the pickups. Just 1 small hiccup I received 2 A strings instead of the low E but easily fixed. Told a few friends they will probably order in the near future.

I’m very impressed with this LP ! Sanded it and clear coated because I love the look this thing has. I’m having a hard time putting it down and the sound is really killer! Special thanks to Matt for the help! I’d recommend Solo Guitars to anyone that wants to make a guitar theirs and theirs only! Got my eye on a Bass now and it WILL be a Solo! Great guitars!! ????

First of all, if you’re new to working on guitars, there is no better kit out there. The kit came with literally everything (minus tools and finishing products) you need to build a good quality guitar with minimal skill required. You could literally assemble this guitar and start playing in 36 hours if you wanted to (the glue needs to dry :P).

That being said, I’m a tech of 15+ years. I bought this kit because I wanted to build my own backup guitar and I wanted spalted maple top. I was expecting low quality considering the price but was pleasantly surprised when I found that the body was cut and fit perfectly. I had one spot I wasn’t thrilled about where there was a miscut between the two wood types, but I’m not going to complain about it since it’s in an inconspicuous area.

    Body:
The body/neck came already coated with a filler. I wanted to my own finish on this guitar, so I ended up sanding off the initial filler before I applied the finish. The nice thing was it took a bit to sand off the filler, so a good coat was already on the guitar so you could probably paint right away if that’s what you were looking to do. Kudos for that. The spalted maple top on the front of the guitar is paper-thin so you’ll have to be careful sanding, especially around the edges. There are also a good amount of uneven spots on the top, so if you’re looking for a perfectly flat surface, you’ll have to spend a good amount of time on the final finishes or just pick up a mahogany top. I actually loved the uneven surface as it gave my guitar the finish i wanted. The back of the body is perfect, as the wood matched, grains lined up well and the electronic cavities were routed cleanly. The neck came straight and the already assembled fretboard was in great shape and the frets were just about level. I had one high spot that was barely noticeable. I’m just picky. The frets themselves Just needed a little polishing after I finished the guitar and they looked top-notch. The head had the same paper-thin face to it, but not a lot of sanding was needed there. The stain and subsequent coats of tru-oil went on nicely.

I ended up doing a blackburst finish and using Tru Oil as my finish of choice which came out perfectly and I’m more than happy with how it turned out. Too bad we can’t share pictures 😛

    Electronics:
To be honest, I wasn’t expecting much for a $200 kit so I didn’t use any of the electronics, pickups or tuners on this guitar, so I can’t do an accurate rating on the sound. I can, however, give you my observations. The pots came pre-soldered with mini 500k pots, and a standard cap for tone. Keep in mind this guitar was routed for the included mini pots, so your bridge-tone pot, if ever replaced, will have to be a mini pot or else it won’t fit. The pickups are 2-conductor (hot and ground) so custom wiring such as coil tapping, would require another set of pickups. The pickup selector switch was noticeably a cheaper switch and I wasn’t fond of how loose it felt when switching between settings so I replaced that with a switchcraft. I did use the output jack because, well, it’s an output jack and they’re pretty standard across the board with little variance. The tuners themselves seemed as though they’d do the job, and I’ll definitely use them on a repair job later down the line, but I already picked up hipshots for this project so that’s what I used.

    Assembly:
The guitar went together perfectly with little-to-no effort. The neck joint was tight and aligned to the bridge and pickup routes. All plate covers fit perfectly. I think the only thing I’d say here is to watch the neck joint height itself. I had to shim the very back of the cavity as the cut put the neck at a greater angle than it needed to be meaning the bridge/pickups would have had to be set higher than normal if I had left it alone or face a ton of buzzing. It’s a simple fix if you catch it early enough, but make sure you check the height alignment before you glue.

    Overall:
This was a great project guitar and I didn’t spend as much time as I thought I would sanding, repairing or assembling the guitar. It was an easy build and looks/sounds fantastic. I’m extremely happy with this product and I’ll definitely be back for my next project.

This kit is fantastic. The spalted veneer is beautiful and the mahogany is nice and solid. Hardware feels heavy and substantial and the pickups look slick. Everything is pre-wired minus the pickups and input jack so finishing the setup is a fairly simple with a very small amount of soldering. Working the wood, caring for the frets/fret ends, and gluing it all together was more than enjoyable. I basically started a YouTube channel/company strictly off of the fun I’m having with this build! I’ll definitely buy for Solo again.

I was very happy with my first Solo guitar kit! Everything was neatly organized and shipped to me perfectly. Everything went together wonderfully! Overall, you can’t beat the value in Solo guitar kit. Especially if you’re a first-time builder, like I am.

Unfortunately, there was a flaw in the spalted maple veneer. It was not noticeable at first, but after applying my first coat of transparent dye, it became obvious. Apparently the veneer had split and popped up on the contoured body, and then was reglued poorly. I was able to remedy the situation by putting an aftermarket pick guard on to conceal it. The hardware that was included was decent, but of course, all of it can be upgraded to your liking. I had an aftermarket pick guard, and machined black knobs. All in all I would have to say I was extremely satisfied with my results. The string action is incredible, and it plays beautifully! Mainly because the neck fit perfectly into the body cavity, and the neck was straight as can be!

I am still having some trouble with connecting the electronics, but hoping to remedy that soon. Solos customer service was good at answering my wiring questions. All in all, a tremendous value! If you’re looking for your first built, get yourself a Solo guitar kit! You won’t be disappointed!

Over all I am very impressed with the craftsmanship of the parts. The body and neck fit very snug which is nice since I did not buy the bolt on neck version. The fret board needs a little adjustment, but I don’t see any issues with the frets being sharp or uneven. My only negative would be that the head stock was not finished. There is no spalted maple veneer on the face and the screw holes are not pre-drilled for the machines on the back of the headstock. After looking at photos of other kits I feel that this one didn’t get the quality control check that it should have. However, I do a lot of wood working so drilling a few holes is not an issue and with the blank face of the headstock it leaves room for my imagination. I have not yet assembled the kit so I cannot give an honest report of the electronic components. I’m saving this project for when the weather turns too cold to be outdoors.

Part 1. I just received my kit 2 days earlier than the tracking estimated. I was not disappointed in the Spalted pattern since every guitar is unique. The box came with green tape letting me know that customs was interested in what was in the box. A quick inventory and all parts are accounted for. I’m eager to start the finishing and assembly process and will post a part 2 to this review when I’m done. ????

I decided to give a shot to guitar-building, and I figured a kit was the way to go to for my first build. I saw a video online (youtube) for a build of this very same model, and decided to give it a shot. I also decided that I wanted to upgrade the hardware to make this a better sounding guitar from the get-go, so I ordered Seymore Duncan Hotrodded humbuckers (JB and Jazz set), Gotoh Schaller-Style tunners, Schaller Locking Strap Buttons, Schaller roller Tune-o-Matic bridge, GotohTailpiece (which I ended up not using and keeping the stock one because the color was off), CTS pots (which require new knobs), Emerson 0.022MFD and 0.015MFD caps, Switchcraft Switch, and a bone nut blank. I also have a few Ernie Ball’s Regular Slinky strings always on hand, which is what I used on this guitar. In other words, I cannot comment on the hardware because I never used it, so bear that in mind.

First things first. The guitar was well packed, and included all necessary hardware (most of it I discarded, though). The neck fit was snug and firm. The wood was immaculate, and the spalted veneer was plain AWESOME! I did not expected it to look as good as it did, honestly speaking! The one on the video is nowhere near as good-looking as mine! The video also has different tones on the back (at least one part of it), but mine did not. I basically followed the video for doing the fretwork and gluing in the neck. However, I did need to re-do the fretwork once the guitar was finished because the frets were not shiny smooth (now they are!) and the guitar was a bit rough to play.

For finishing I decided on a mix of 1/3 mineral spirits, 1/3 pure tung oil (Real Milk Paint Pure Tung Oil), and 1/3 Polyurethane (ZAR brand). This went real thin, but I have to say I am really happy with the results. They guitar has a nice satin sheen to it. At first, I considered dying the back to make it a bit darker, but I wanted to get going, and I went with the same finish, and I am now glad I did. The final color is exactly what I had in mind. I used shielded wires for the connections (except the pickup wires; mine are 4 wire pickups), but I did use copper tape throughout the inside to shield the guitar’s cavities anyway. The finish did require many coats (about 5 or 6), with lots of sanding in between. I would apply one coat each night, then come in the next night, sand and re-apply until finished. Took a while to cover the entire guitar, but the finish is exactly what I was looking for.

I then installed the bridge and the tail, so see how it all fit. One thing I noticed is that the holes for the tailpiece were VERY SLIGHTLY canted outwards (almost impossible to notice by eye), which makes the distance between posts just a hair more than what is supposed to be. This made getting the tailpiece in place a small adventure, but in the end, it was nothing that a love-tap with a rubber mallet did not fix. This was not the case with the bridge (which, like it is supposed to, falls out without string tension). Tuner holes were perfectly sized, and I had no issues there. Mastercraft swithc fit perfectly in the hole (I read somewhere that it required drilling to fit; not the case for me), as did the CTS pots (also read that they required drilling, but mine did not). The jack did fit snugly, but it fit (I did have to remove the copper tape, though, as it caused a short with the signal because it touched the side).

I did use the stick pickup mounts (fit fine with the SD pickups), and they look nice once they are in. I also used the stock plate for the jack, as well as the truss rod cover plate. All fit just fine. One important thing is that I used the kit’s string at first (just to check fit and such), and one of them lost the eye VERY quickly. But let’s be honest, not many of us are going to use those strings anyway!

At first, I used the original “bone”, but found that the action was very high and uncomfortable to play. Even lowering the bridge, open cords (first few frets) had very high action, so I decided to give the bone blank a shot. Boy, did the guitar change! The factory nut is plastic (and not the fancy type), is very high, and the strings are deep into it. The nut is also hollow, which I do not think is good for a solid tone. My handmade nut is just a hair higher than the frets, and I tried to keep a little less than half the string from going into the nut. I also got to lower the bridge now, which made the action very nice for my style of playing.

For a first guitar, I found this kit to be great. Sure, it is not the absolute best quality guitar, but the workmanship is good, and the value is great. And it looks VERY nice, plays very well, and has a nice sound to it. It was a great experience building this guitar, and I am looking forward to making a second one sometime soon (this time, I want a shot at making the body from scratch). I would certainly recommend this kit to someone in a similar position to mine. This guitar has replaced my PRS SE as my main guitar (they have different sounds, but this one plays better!).

Just remember that the end result will be a direct reflection of the amount of work you put in. So take your time and do things right. Do not cut corners!

I would of gave a five star rating, but, because I did not receive my 5% discount, nor did I get it at the price I originally ordered at. Also the wait time was two months, but not to the companies fault as it was back ordered. Anyways, as for the product itself, looks and feels fantastic. Haven’t started the project yet, but did a check of neck alignment and fit as it is a set neck. The strings did line up perfectly, and are straight. Amazingly enough is that the frets were already dressed. The hard part now is deciding how and what finish I’m doing. It seems to be a very nice kit and the video camparison to an actual les Paul sold me on this kit.

Part 2. Finished in tung oil then a glossy protective finish. Awesome. Putting it together was easy and the wiring diagram was easy enough to follow. Quick sound check and I’ll be doing a set up next. Really pleased on how it looks.

    Just superb kit.
Never built guitar before, and had no issues building this kit. Looks just fantastic and sounds great. Cavity for neck pickup needed some work so the pickup sitted nicely in it´s place…

Fast shipment, just 6 days from Canada to Finland..

Will surely buy another SOLO project in the future

Very happy with this kit. This was my first guitar kit, so was a bit nervous starting with a level 3 but that was all that was available at the time. Knowing that spalted maple will be unique each time, it was with great anticipation I opened the box. Yessssss, I was super happy with the look of mine. Even the head stock was freakin awesome looking.

Upon watching numerous YouTube vids on these (shout out to Brad Angove), I checked all hardware and neck for fit and alignment. So far so good, in fact even the frets were completely level and no truss rod adjustment needed. I did have to sand the neck some in order for it to fit into the body.

Again following video advice on the finishing aspects, I decided on a tung oil and poly clear on top and stain, tung oil, and wax on back. Took my time and didn’t cut corners and wow the finished product looks so sweet.

I stuck with the hardware that came with it and I am pleasantly surprised how good it looks and plays. I don’t feel that it looks like a cheap knockoff, in fact it looks expensive to me.

Customer service was fantastic for me as I did have an issue with one of the machine heads, which they replaced quickly. In the end, I have learned a lot by now completing a build. My confidence is high that the more I do, the more creative I can be and have an arsenal of unique guitars! So yes, will be buying more from Solo!!

This was a great kit to build! I had a lot of fun with it and love how it turned out. I cannot believe I won guitar of the month for March 2023! Please see my write-up there for more info on my build.
