    Nice DIY-Kit-Guitar..

The neck is nicely done, big as a baseball-bat.

We did not use the electric part.. instead we used a dimarzio Virtual P90

The Kit-Guitar is good.. but I paid a skilled man for the job..

I do like the guitar.. good sustain.

Excellent LP, that looks and sounds great! But this was my first build, so I took my time.

The body was going to be stained, but after the first coat, I realized that some glue spots would not allow the stain to set. I sanded as much as possible, but concluded that I needed to go darker – so I opted for ebony to contrast the gold hardware. It still didn’t take in spots, on the top and sides, so I swung the other way and sanded some areas off to take an aged look.

Then I coated with Tung oil (3 coats), and let set. When ready, I completed the electrical – which is a simple drop in and finish arrangement. Eventually I will update this to a 50s style wiring, but for the time being, it works very well!

If you take your time, and try out your problem-solving skills, you should have a quality guitar in your hands!

Overall the kit is well prepared. I had hoped to finish in tobacco burst but the top veneer had some unfavourable artifacts and grain issues. Also the body was 4 laminated pieces that were inconsistent for natural finish. So i went for goldtop.
The pre wired pots were wired incorrectly. The audio taper pots were on the tone and linear was on volume. Had to rewire to stock LP to get to work.
The description states that pups come on a mounting ring . These soapbar pups do not. Disappointed that kit does not include pickguard. I made my own.

I am pleased with the finished product . the neck is quite good. Fret finish is good some needed touching up. Love the sound from these p90s. Plays well. Will consider doing another solo kit. Have learned something about guitar finishing.

The LPK-90 was my third Solo kit. I had nothing but good things to say about the 2 earlier kits. Unfortunately, I was disappointed with this one for the following two reasons:
    1. Maple veneer – I do not see the point of having a veneer unless you are looking for a nicely figured top. This one looked pretty plain and came with a lot of little dents on the surface which I could not sand through due to the paper thin veneer. I could have fixed these problems if it had been a solid mahogany body without the veneer, but unfortunately this is the only Solo Les Paul kit with P90 pickups.
    2. Veneer not properly glued – There were a lot of “air bubbles” under the veneer around the edge. You can’t possibly cover this type of problems with a finish without trying to fix it first and it is not easy to fix.
I wrote to Solo about these problems and I was simply told that my email would be forwarded to their quality assurance dept. Anyway, I thought I would write about it so others can be aware of this before ordering the LPK-90 kit. If you do order it, check that the veneer is properly glued and that the surface is not too dented before doing a proper unboxing. Mine could have been better, hence the 3 stars.

Tried my first kit, and due to low stock, ordered a LPK10 from “B-Stock.” I did a traditional black/red/amber sunburst, using Keda water based stain, and after getting comfortable with the process, and a lot of youtube (thank you Brad Angove) it came out fantastic. Did a brush-on gloss Varithane finish. Had no problem with alignment of the set (glued in) neck or installation of hardware. The end result is a gorgeous guitar that plays better day by day as tne neck settles in. As indicated in the instructions, I did need to file the ends of the frets to smooth them out, but this only took about an hour. Overall, I’m very satisfied, and just started on my second, a maple flame top in blue. Also, no instructions were included, so I had to go on the website and download/print the pdf.
    Some things to consider:
    1. The wiring diagram was a bit vague and confusing for a first timer. A quick call to Solo (thank Padraig!) straightened me right out, and I had a working guitar. Would suggest a link to a comprehensive video for customers with a live step-by-step soldering guide (“solder this wire here, like so, and solder the other end there…” would be awesome.
    2. The volume and tone pots are cheap, and the volume is either on or off. After more youtube, I was able to purchase a set of four high end pots for about $20 and replace them outright. Problem solved.
    3. Minor fret buzz at the octave fret, but then again, I did not level the frets. May do that in the future.
    4. Intonation setup is a mystery, you just have to play with it. Suggest another link out to a video on how to set the intonation on your guitar.
Overall, thrilled with the experience, and for about $200, I think it’s well worth the money. Super excited to get the second one completed!

My quest for a relic P90 Gold Top LP led me to Solo Music Gear. I knew that it would be very difficult to relic any factory guitar with a polyurethane finish so I needed to find a kit and start from scratch to be able to apply a nitro cellulous finish. I ordered the Solo LPK-90 and received my kit in less than a week and was immediately impressed with the quality.

The Build: First step was to check the neck and frets. The neck was straight and did not need any adjustments. I took my time and leveled the frets which were very close and hardly required any filing or sanding. The neck to body cavity was so tight that it needed a little sanding and slight chamfer on the neck where it meets the body to accommodate the glue.

The Paint: I was anxious to try the relic’ing technique that I found on YouTube and Guitar.com website (https://guitar.com/guides/diy-workshop/greco-goldtop-conversion-part-eight/). The paint I used was the Stew-Mac “bright” gold top kit. READ and follow the instructions that comes with the kit and you will have a great finish. The gold top looks so good my friends thought I was crazy to relic it but when they saw the results, they agreed that it really looks like a vintage Gold Top LP. I painted the body separately then glued on the neck before masking off the fret board and cavities for the clear coats.

Assembly: Since this was a single coil guitar, I used copper foil on the cavities to create an EMI shield. The blue and red wires were switched on the pre-wired assembly on my kit and did not match the Solo wiring diagram. I did put some washers between the pots and the body to get the knobs closer to the body. Also, I used Gotoh vintage aged tuners. You will need the conversion adapters since the predrilled holes are too big. The aged tuners really added to the look. The tunomatic bridge was also replace with an aged one from the internet. I sanded off the brass/copper from the aluminum tail piece and put it in the dishwasher to age it. The kit did not come with a pick guard so I found a P90 pick guard and had to modify it for the spacing of the P90s.

Results: The guitar exceeded my expectations on looks and play-ability. It plays and sounds great with the stock pickups. I had a professional guitar player friend play it for about 30 minutes. He handed it back to me and said “Don’t change a thing. This is a guitar I would borrow”

Thank you Solo Music Gear for posting my Gold Top on your social media pages.

I’ll be trying to copy the 58/59 burst LP with the Solo LPK-200 kit next!

    – Steve

This kit was fantastic to build. Body and neck fit great. And the parts that came with the kit were great also.(for kit parts). I would recommend this particular kit to anyone wanting a great LP with P90’s. I had no issues with this kit. Looking forward to building another one.

I LOVE MY LPK-90, it was my first kit and I ordered a B stock version but was satisfied even though it was a challenge. I originally assembled it with all the stock parts but quickly upgraded everything. I really enjoy SOLOs stuff but the lack of being able to just order it with upgraded parts, even at an extra cost, is frustrating and almost makes me want to put 4 stars.

IF YOU DON’T KNOW HOW TO ASSEMBLE GUITAR KITS GO TO BRAD ANGOVE YOUTUBE AND WATCH HIS TUTORIALS SAVE YOURSELF ALOT OF TRIAL AND ERROR, HE LITERALLY SHOWS YOU 90% OF THE WORK THAT NEEDS TO BE DONE

LPK-90 Kit review, unboxing and dry fit.
Ordered the kit with Wilkinson vintage green keys tuners, conversion bushings and vintage braided cable.
As usual this was a ”fast and furious” shipment. My order was confirmed on the Thuesday with delivery at
my door on the Saturday morning 8:00 AM! This is my 7th kit from Solo and again the packaging is top notch.
These guys should open the University of Packaging.
First the neck; it is straight, frets are levelled and the ends are very smooth. I would say the these are small vintage frets,
    love it!
Second the body; the maple veneer is plain maple but has a very nice figuring, the mahogany back is also very nice and
the pices are well matched. The cutting, carving and binding are also very well done.
Third, the dry fit; The neck pocket was very tight but I had to sand the poly seak anyway. Then it was a perfect snug fit
without any overstress. Installed the bridge bushings, the bridge and dropped the pickups in the cavities. Perfect alignment and
the action will be a breeze to set. Everything falls in the right places, WOW!
I will not comment on the hardware, pickups and electronics as I will use only the tailpiece and the output jacks. I have my plans
    and ordered all the upgrades.
Now it is in my hands to turn it into a great guitar. So far I am very with my 6 previous kits.

    Salut, Mi chel

Up dated review from October 29, 2022.
This was a great project, the body and neck were perfect. No glue lines or spots on the veneer or binding.
The assembly was very easy for a great fit. The angled neck joint makes it a breeze to reach the high frets and
is very comfortable ( too bad Gibson…).
    Modifications:
Tuners: Wilkinson vitage style with 10mm conversion bushings
    Bridge: Nashville style
Pots; full size A330 K volumes with treble bleed and B330 K tones. Independent volumes wiring.
    Switch: real 3 way toggle.
Wiring: braided wire, does not chang the tone but look great under the hood.
Pickups; aged alnico 5 P90 with black covers, braided wires.
Knobs; SG style black with gold tops.
    Truss rod cover; gold.
Finish: sanded the veneer and the neck by hand with 150 and 220 grit paper. Did the body back and
sides with the same grit but using a sander. Did a worn aged dark walnut to honey burst on the top
and dark walnut on the rest of the budy and neck. Front of the headstock is flat black. All using Samans
water based stains. Finished with 5 coats of flat Samans water based varnish.
She looks great in person and plays fantastic.
I just wish I coud give this kit 6 stars,

    Michel

I absolutely love this kit. There were no issues at all with my kit. All the parts were good, I chose to upgrade the parts. I installed gold Grover Deluxe tuners, Lindy Fralin P90 pickups, and Bourns 500k pots, with Orange Drop Caps. I decided to paint as a gold top. I own a Gibson that is one hell of a guitar. I put this guitar right up there with that Gibson. The guitar notes and plays beautiful. I have decided to purchase another one. Foreseeing it to be painted black.

This is my 2nd solo build, my first set neck and I’m mostly happy.

I say mostly. Because nothing is perfect.

Let me start with the good
First of all, the kit all came together well, with minimal modification and work needed, and it is a player. I mean it really plays nice. The action is good and low, the neck angle was almost perfect out of the box, the neck pocket was tight (a bit too tight I needed to sand a little off just to make sure the glue didn’t swell things too much.

While I did need to do fret work that was minimal. There was fret sprout that a little file action fixed right away. I had a few high frets that were all fixed with a rubber mallet.

The frets were shiney but not actually smooth. I had to sand them from 600 grit to 2000 grit then use a dremel with polish to get them smooth. This was expected and honestly for the cost getting a neck that was as good as this one made me happy.

Everything came together, everything works. I didn’t need to modify the bridge much. I did have to take some 600 grit paper to sand down one of the posts to get it to fit inside the bridge. This was the only part that needed modification. I wasn’t thrilled with it, but it was an easy fix.

Now for why I can’t give this 5 stars.
first. I don’t understand why there was a poor looking maple veneer on the top. the body is clearly a mahogany body and unknown wood top with the veneer on it. Either use a real maple top or just leave the other wood exposed. The veneer isn’t good looking enough for a stain or translucent finish so you are going to have to use something like paint as there is just no grain or any reason to expose the top (thus why the gold top existed from Gibson)

There also was clearly some tearout on the bottom that must have come during routing, and there was a patch. it was sanded ok but it is clearly visible. I did stain the back and sides rather than paint them, and with a dark red stain the patch is harder to see.

The neck pocket was cut well but a wee bit too tight. I suppose that is better than being too loose as it is very easy to sand the neck down a little.

The electronics are.. well, functional. that is about all I can say for them. The taper is more like an on/off switch for both volume and tone. The switch is a budget switch. and the pickups work but are a bit… dark.

These things weren’t unexpected and for the price I can live with them.

Like I said, this is a player, the neck feels amazing, with very little work I got the frets about perfect, the bridge needed only a little sanding on a post.. and the most important bits the neck and its pocket and angle worked.

I did replace the nut with a graphtec nut because.. well.. the hollow plastic nut had to go.. after the nut on the LP Jr kit kept binding keeping it on this guitar wasn’t an option.

I did upgrade the tuners to the Solo locking tuners. Do yourself a favor if you buy this kit, go ahead and get the Solo locking tuners. For the price you can’t really beat them.

I also got shielding paint and painted all the cavities AND the wire route.. this guitar is quiter than my Music Man Cutlass and my G&L ASAT… I was expecting the P90s to have similar level of hum..

I’m going to play it in over the next couple of weeks and then gig it. I like how this thing plays that much.

If you aren’t sure about Les Pauls and you want one at a very good price that is 100% yours.. This kit is a great way to go.

I will be buying a 3rd Solo Kit.. I just don’t know which one yet. So far my LP Jr and this LP P90 kit are both keepers and were fun to build and are fun to play.

If you are trying to decide between this one and the Jr.. I say get this one. why? I like the neck a little better. and the set neck wasn’t that much harder than the bolt on.
