I ordered this kit because I was interested in trying a kit build, and a friend of mine had recently given me a small bass amp but I did not own a bass guitar so I thought this was a great place to start. I had not heard much about SOLO Music Gear kits, but I had heard several not so good things about the other kit sellers I had available, so I decided to see what SOLO had to offer. My first impressions upon receiving my kit were very good. Wood was beautiful, the body and neck seemed well designed and manufactured. Neck pocket fit very well. I did notice that two of the pilot holes for the neck screws had been drilled incorrectly, and then driller properly alongside the incorrect holes. This was a simple fix though with a short piece of doweling and some good wood glue. Once set up and sanded smooth, it was as strong as if the error had never been made. I finished the bass with stain and poly finish, topped off with a paste finishing wax, and the results are stunning. Kit went together very easily, pre-drilled holes were all perfectly done, cavity covers fit very well (this was a common complaint among several other kit seller’s products!!). I choose to upgrade the pickups and electronics, although I did hook up the supplied parts and they were nice, I just personally wanted something a little higher quality. (I am also not that great with a soldering iron, and my new pickups are available with a pre-soldered electronics harness, so that was a big part of my decision to replace the stock parts.) Overall, this kit makes for a very solid build. I was quite impressed with the quality of the tuning machines, they are very solid for a product at this price point. The supplied bridge is a nice, heavy piece of metal as well. The intonation and string height all set up very easily, intonation was almost spot on without any adjustments!! Fret work is decent, I have seen worse jobs on brand name guitars selling in stores, so I had no complaints. A very small amount of dressing would leave the frets perfect, but at this point I don’t even feel that work is necessary. I am very impressed with this offering from SOLO, and I further expect that when my new pickups and wiring harness arrive that I will be more than satisfied with my bass!! That being said, I look forward to completing another SOLO kit in the near future!! (OK, there are 6 more I want to try!!)

Nice bass kit – I ordered it for my son and I to build (his first time) so he could use it in his band. Shipping was quick and and upon unboxing we noticed that they had sent a neck plate instead of neck screws and grommets (as pictured in the kit). I sent a note and they shipped the replacements quickly; when we were doing the wiring we found that one of the pots was not correct so they shipped a replacement in no time. Very good customer service!
The neck was pretty decent out of the box; we did dress the fret ends because some were sharp; also the nut had fallen off in shipping but we glued it back on.
We spent a lot of time shielding the body cavities and grounding everything correctly – this bass does not make hum or crackle at all.
The hardware is pretty decent but the bridge is a disappointment – the saddles are hard to adjust for intonation and string height (and they do not go low enough). We had to use a file to lower the grooves in the saddles. I would recommend that they change the bridge to a standard Fender style bass bridge with screw and spring intonation adjustments – much easier and more consistent. We are going to change it.
For the price, the kit turned out well and the sound is actually very nice – lots of volume and punch. It is a light bass and the neck plays real fast. All in all, we are pleased with this kit. I have some experience with guitar repair and set-up so we were able to make this kit turn out as a player… it would be a little more difficult to get is playing right if you had never done this kind of thing before (watch lots of YouTube videos before starting).
I would order another kit and give it a try… an ES style guitar could be in my future.

Excellent kit. And the customer service is impeccable – the wrong neck mounting hardware was sent with this, a simple message cleared it up fast and easy. Went together well, and set up perfectly. Besides obviously needing to finish sand and add the finish etc, all I had to do extra was some very minor fret work near the head stock. When I went to set the intonation, I barely had to adjust the bridge – the default was almost 100% spot on. This was made for a friend for her birthday, I’d love to make one for myself, if it only came in left hand!

The actual wood does’t look like the picture at all, it is plain, all beige and boring. I wish they would change the picture to represent the shipped product.

Aside from that the kit was very easy to assemble, had all the right parts, the neck fit perfectly with the body.

It had two high frets that needed immediate work to make it acceptable, and I’ll probably do a full fret job in the future as a learning process and to make sure it’s as good as it can be.

It’s my first kit and my first bass (I’m a guitar player) so it’s hard to comment on the quality of the pickup / resulting bass but I had a lot of fun getting it together, it sounds good enough for me and it’s very playable. I’m very happy with it 🙂

Kit seems good I haven’t finished it yet. The bridge j pickup appears miscut for stock j pick ups. Maybe it’s fitted for a neck size j pick up instead of a bridge size (the bridge is actually a bit bigger than the neck). I’ve corrected it now, but I have weirder looking routing than I would have liked.

I just built two of these. Although I didn’t use most of the hardware from the kit, I love this bass. If one builds this and decides to get a special set of pickups the Jazz pickup is a 92mm not a 95mm. With a small modification a 95 will fit but the 92 is a perfect fit. These kits are fairly simple and it didn’t take but a few simple tools. Love it, great job Solo! I will be ordering more of these soon.
