This came out beautifully, looking very authentic. Assembly was pretty straightforward, and the painting went well (though one cannot hope to match a factory finish). I had some problems with the electronics. A technically experienced friend looked over what I had done, and told me that the enclosed wiring diagram was wrong; he did it his way, and it works. I would encourage Solo to check out whether the wiring diagram is correct.

After adjusting the truss rod, nut, bridge and a few other things, it plays really nicely. Overall it was fun to build, and it is really good value.

Thanks for pointing out your issues to us regarding wiring up your DIY guitar, your feedback is important to us.
Glad to hear you got it sorted out.
We are currently working to improve our wiring schematics and we will have v2 of our wiring diagrams available soon.
We hope to hear from you again in the future.

This build was fun!!! The build instructions were easy to follow, including the wiring diagram. It sounds and plays great! I love this guitar! Thank you for making such a great kit. I would definitely recommend this kit for anyone looking for a great quality, great playing, and great sounding guitar!

I completed my second Solo kit this morning. I am impressed with the final result. The neck and the fret job were perfect and it plays great. Thanks Matt for his help as the diagram for the wiring was not exact. I only wish I could go back in time and buy the kits when I was younger LOL.

I started building DIY Guitar Kits for the passed three years as part of my retirement. Started with a Amoon Jass Bass from TomTop, a Les Paul Kit from Bargain Musician, a Strat Kit from E-Bay and this SG from Solo. The only reason I tried Solo was Brad Angove’s YouTube. Im hooked, Solo kits are the next leave of craftsmanship. Neck, fretwork, electronics are all very good. My first three kits required me to learn Luthier trade to get them to work. Solo kits are so well engineered, even a beginner like me can have fun doing these kits. Im looking forward to doing a 12 string, a double-neck and many more kits from Solo. I now have people asking for me to build them kits. Thank you Canada!

This is my first guitar kit and I have yet to finish the assembly. The neck to body fit was very tight and the alignment checked out. I did have to level the frets a bit. One fret at about the 13th position was low and subsequently the adjacent frets had to be sanded down a bit more than I’d like. I will not know if there is a problem until I get the guitar finished and playing. If there is I’ll simply re-fret the entire fret-board. Right now I’ve completed the staining and grain filling steps and am at the final finishing stage. I’m following a hand rubbed linseed/poly process laid out by Highline Guitars, you can look for them on YouTube – it is a great channel for information on building guitars. I’ll update this once I have the project completed. My next project will be a semi-hollow 335 style guitar.

This is a high-quality kit. The mahogany body and neck were well constructed and well fit. The frets and fretboard were nice out of the box, but the neck and nut needed considerable adjustment – which is half the fun of setting up your own guitar anyway. The tuners are nice, the pickguard and backplate decent. I did not install the humbuckers although they have some weight and seem ok. I replaced them with 4-wire humbuckers so I could install coil-tapping, which I accomplished with two push-pull pots replacing the Solo tone pots.

Go get one of these. You will not be sorry.

I am going to get one the the LP kits next.

  7. emjayen (verified owner)

This turned out to be a nice looking and great sounding guitar. The pickups are great considering the low cost of the kit. In fact, I almost ordered new Seymour Duncans before I even tried these. Glad I decided to give these a whirl because they sound really good. The frets were nicely dressed…no sharp ends and they seem to be level. All parts were accounted for and in perfect condition. The wiring was a snap. So now I have a guitar that looks a lot like a vintage cherry Gibson SG, and is a lot of fun to play.

There was a couple problems though.

First, the body is made up of two pieces of wood, one of which should have been thrown away. There is a crack (gap) about 1 mm by 4 inches that runs along the tail by the electronics cavity. This was filled in…poorly. Also on that same piece of wood is a hairline crack on the side up by the horn that runs along for about 5 inches. That one piece of wood makes up less than one third of the body, so I’m not sure why they didn’t just chuck it away. In hindsight, I should have requested a replacement.

Second, the heel (??) of the neck did not sit flush with the body. It stuck up about 1.5 mm, so I had to carefully chisel/sand it down to make it flush. The result is that it looks to me like the fretboard sits too high up compared to the body. I guess it’s just a visual thing, because It really doesn’t seem to cause a problem since I was able to adjust the pickups and bridge up high enough to get proper sound and string height. I think this is a design flaw though… it looked like the one in Brad’s videos had the same issue.

Aside from those two gripes, everything was great. I definitely recommend this kit…you’ll end up with a great guitar that is easy on the bank account.

This was my thirds guitar from Solo. It arrived on time and everything came with the kit. Everything fit nicely, though I upgraded all electronics and hardware. The holes drilled for the pickups were a bit small for the leads from the new pickup so I had to widen the holes a bit. The only issue I had with the kit was the nut. It was WAY too tall and had the actions super high. At first I was scared because on my first build, ( a telecaster) I wanted to replace the nut and had a very hard time removing it. I had to file the nut as it must have been placed with an insane amount of crazy glue. This nut however was a lot easier to remove with a bit of patience and a sharp blade, it came off with not problems. I sanded to the proper height and everything was fixed. This has become one of my favorite guitars to play. That neck is big and chunky but very playable. This was a redemption build for me as the last set neck guitar I built was glued in a little off. This time around, I used tight bond I, not II, and was able to set the neck perfectly. If you decide to use all the stock electronics and hardware, you won’t have to do any modifications. As I wanted to split the coils and use CTS pots, I had to widen all those holes slightly. Otherwise, it’s a straight up easy build. I’ve already started on my next project, and yes it is a solo kit.

  9. kingalexl (verified owner)

excellent kit, I was pleased to find out that the soldering was already done for me other than soldering the pickup connections, it saves me a bit of work. The routing on the body is very clean and the neck is smooth and appears to have a coat of poly already applied. My only gripe with the kit is that the fretboard has several dings (they look like file marks from when the fretwork was done) that I had to do some work on, though this wasn’t a big deal.

Overall an excellent kit for the money

  10. jaimeguajardo (verified owner)

    Overall, a very good kit.
Pros: very good neck joint fit. The end frets very smooth.
Cons: electronics adequate. Better quality pots would be nice but understandably would drive up the cost. The wood around the toggle switch hole needed to be modified in order for the treble/rhythm washer to fit. Locking nuts for the pots and switch are not included. The tuner holes don’t line up with their opposite counterpart. The tuners themselves can be upgraded. Lastly, but most importantly, the frets needed leveling. If you’re unable (the buyer) to do this, the kit is worthless because that’s a very necessary and important part of a playable guitar.
Conclusion: For the price, a very good buy. I highly recommend to anyone able to make this work.

  11. dave071560 (verified owner)

What I was most worried about with this kit was being able to glue it straight. It turned out great. All the adjustments went great. I think I like this guitar as much as my Les Paul Studio. I did upgrade the tuners and plan to upgrade the nut and the electronics including the pickups. I wanted to make sure that it was worth upgrading. After getting it built and playing it, it is definitely worth it!

  12. dave071560 (verified owner)

I love the end result! I am so pleased with this that I am going to spend a little more and do some upgrades. I went with the distressed look. 🙂

  13. Timothy Hennig (verified owner)

Fun kit. Not too difficult a build. After setting the neck and checking for straight using fishing line I should have put some scribe mark to help during clamping and glueing. Live and learn. Just a bit off but still playable. only issue I had were the bridge saddle screws weren’t tapped right and the screw broke so I can’t adjust the intonation on the D string. This was my second build looking forward to more.

After 35 days I’m still waiting, Let me explain: ordered December 20 2021 after notification it was back in stock; shipped pretty quickly but got stuck in US Customs. Granted, this was around Christmas and then there’s COVID. I contacted SOLO and they intervened and I received the kit January 2 2022. Did the customary pre-build check and discovered the neck didn’t fit the neck pocket… WAY too much wiggle room (the tongue tapered by .9mm from neck pocket end to heel). I notified SOLO that same day, January 2; they offered to replace it… on January 6. Was sent the return label on January 11; brought to UPS store January 12; promised to ship the replacement on January 14 (today). Even if it DOES ship today, it still has to go through Customs… I hope to update this review sometime during 2022. :-I

  15. kingdom345kck (verified owner)

So I promised to update my 3 star review of January 14, 2022. Received the replacement SG kit quickly… no Stuck In Customs issue this time. Superb neck-neck pocket fit. Did a dry build and all the pieces fit as I they should. This is a great kit! I’ve built another SG from an eBay, made in China, kit. This SOLO is just so obviously better. Especially the body wood; can’t beat mahogany. Fretboard is beautiful, although fret ends were a little sharp… no big deal. Can’t speak to the electronics because all is being upgraded. This SOLO kit build is one I am proud of.

  16. bluesfan

I built this kit about 2 years ago. Purchased it from Amazon, sorry but I did not know about Solo back then.
It arrived very quickly and well packed in a Solo box with all the documentation so I got curious and visited their site!
    Now I go direct.
The quality and fit was great out of the box.
    Modding:
Pick ups, Old School alnico 5 Zebra neck 8,0 K and bridge 9,2 K.
Pots, Push Pull volumes for Coil split and full size for tone. Treble bleed circuit on volumes.
Had to enlarge the control cavity just a bit to fit the full size pots and all the extra wiring. No big deal,
this is part of the fun.
Did an aged finish on all the chrome hardware, pick ups, mounting rings, etc.
Changed the tuners to vintage kluson style with adaptor busings to fit the 10 mm holes.
    Finish:
The wood grain was so nice that I decided to go natural (no stain) and applied 4 coats of Samans
water base flat finish varnish after sanding and aging the wood. The headstock is worn black.
The set up was easy, I only needed to file the nut slots and polish the frets. Leveling was not needed.
I have a nice low action without buzzing. Perfect!
It is well balanced and has no neck dive like most SG’s.
At the end I like it better than my real Gibson SG Standard.
Since then I purchased 4 more kits from Solo dicrect and they all received 5 stars from me.
    More to come!

This is my third kit over the years, and it is easily one of the best. I am very pleased with the quality of the wood and machining of this kit. The neck was so nice that if it hadn’t needed sanding to remove the poly sealer, I could have almost painted it as it came out of the box. The body that came with my kit is made up of three pieces of wood and was also nicely machined. Wood grain and color matching was acceptable and just needed the same poly sealer removed and the final finish sanding done. The instructions are pretty good overall but if you are a total novice, you’re going to have questions as there is a lot more to setting up a guitar than just putting parts together. Be sure to carefully follow the instructions on how to align the neck as there is room for error. There isn’t a whole lot of depth in the neck to body pocket to ensure proper alignment and you can easily screw the kit up if you aren’t paying attention. I am just at the point of putting the lacquer finish on as I write this. While I can easily finish the kit with the supplied parts, I am planning on upgrading most of the hardware and electronics. I have already level sanded and dressed the frets. With a proper final setup of the action, I am expecting this to be a stellar sounding and playing guitar. Totally Stoked!

Great kit to build! I did find though, as with all Solo kits so far, that the neck needed a shim. I use the Stew Mac shims that completely cover the bottom of the pocket and provide a surface to glue to. The only real con with this kit is that the fret markers on the side of the neck are tiny … really small, and just about invisible to my tired old eyes. But no worries … I usually use the fretboard markers instead. Once finished and assembled the guitar setup was very straightforward and resulted in an excellent playing instrument. Very pleased overall.

I love this guitar! Finished this kit a few days ago it is a great sounding and playing guitar! The stock pickups were OK but I put a Guitar Fetish Dream 180 in the bridge a a Dream 90 humbucker sized P90 in the neck it sounds wonderful. I can’t say enough about the body and neck woods it finished out perfectly in that Gibson cherry red color. I have new tuning machines on the way since the ones included in kit are not at all accurate. This was an easy build but I spent a lot of time on setup including fret leveling and polishing. I would recommend this kit to anyone who wants to end up with a very playable and economical guitar.

I built this kit 8 months ago as a gift for my brother’s 30th birthday. This was the first guitar I ever built, and I am now working on my second kit from Solo. I also own a 12 string Tele kit that a friend built for me (person who introduced me to guitar building). That being said, my review doesn’t consider how these kits stack up to other kit brands.

I am writing this review now because I am frustrated with all the sanding involved, more about that later.

I finished this kit with water based products from Lee Valley. Went with water based because I am working in the house basement. I applied the products pretty much in this order
    15-20 rounds of sand/stain
3-4 sprayed on coats of sanding sealer
8-9 sprayed on polyurethane varnish/finish satin coat
I was planning to grain fill but after the first sanding sealer layers I thought the result was looking good and decided to skip that altogether. The end result is sublime, but it was a lot of work.

Here are the pros and cons of this kit.

    Pros
    – Excellent wood work, the body is beautiful, the neck and fretboard are amazing, wow!
    – It is relatively easy to put this kit together, even with the set neck. BTW the Tele kit is even easier.
    – The frets are well finished and appear to be leveled. I did not verify this with any tools, I just trusted the kit description and after assembling/playing it I could not detect any major problems except maybe with a few frets (very minor). If you watch some videos of people putting these kits together they immediately go ahead level the frets even though Solo says that was already done?
    – The pickups are fine. All the reviews I read here have people immediately changing the pickups, and I could not find anyone commenting on the stock pickups. They are pretty neutral, but they are fine. Even the ones on my 12 string sound decent. I play on my Spark amp which has infinite settings so I can get pretty much any sound I want out of them.
    – The pickguard and other plastic covers are good quality
    – The volume/tone pots and knobs are very nice too
    – The tune-o-matic bridge is high quality, pretty and heavy

    Cons
    – The tuning machines are cheap, and it is something that you touch often on a guitar, so if anything change these immediately to increase the quality feel. I bought the Solo Pros locking tuning machines for my Tele and they are beautiful.
    – The pickup selector switch on this kit is garbage. It’s even difficult to tighten it in place because the metal is so cheap. It works well though.
    – The pickup mounting rings are very cheap plastic. Once mounted they look fine though.
    – A problem with the woodwork: the neck pickup cavity was not exactly in the right place. I had to file down the small pickguard neck filler to get the pickup to fit where it’s supposed to. Also, because this guitar has an angled/inclined neck, the neck pickup also needs to be on a slight incline inside the cavity, and the cavity being so far up the body did not accommodate this so I had to route out part of the cavity. Pretty easy fix but only found out near the end of the build.
    – At least one part of the wood on this kit (and another on the Tele kit) was repaired at the factory with some wood filler. It’s extremely hard to tell at first glance because the color matched pretty well, but when you sand and try to apply stain on it you can immediately tell.
    – Last but not least: Sanding. I hope you like sanding, 80% of the time spent working on these kits is going through rounds of heavy sanding and staining. This may be a particularity of finishing it with water based stain, but the kits come absolutely drenched in a poly (oil based) protective coat and you can’t stain that so you have so sand the hell out of it. Solo says you can just sand it down, spray some water on it to see if it absorbs to know when to stop, but the reality is that some areas of the wood absorbed more of that poly stuff at the factory, and those require a lot of sanding. The ends of the wood grain (sides of the guitar) seem to absorb even more. Don’t even get me started on the hard to reach areas and the neck. I sanded and stained as much as I could, but I gave up on some areas because it would have taken too long.

All in all I’m very happy with my experience, but I wish there was an alternative to sanding that poly sealer because it prevents me from getting this at the perfection level that I like. I’m going to try some chemicals to help me remove the harder parts.

    Happy sanding!

This is my 12th kit from Solo and my 2nd SG kit (see my previous review under Bluesfan). As usual this was a very very well packaged fast shipment.
The body was very nice and well cut. I am very impressed with the neck. The fret ends were smooth without sharp edges and very well leveled, only did
a light polish. The nut slots were cut at the perfect depth for low action at the first fret. Wow!
After sanding off all the poly sealer the neck pocked was a little loose so I glued a shim using thin mahogany veneer that I had. Now it is a perfect fit
    and the shim is invisible.
I also reshaped the body contours and bevels to replicate my Gibson SG Frank Zappa Roxy Limited Edition. This was a fair amount of work with rasp, file
and sanding but the result looks great.
I used A500 K Push Push volume put wired for series parallel option and B500K full size pts for tone all with brass shafts and sleeves.
The tuners are Solo Pro aged vintage with conversion bushings.
Installed aged pickups and hardware and aged all the plastic parts.
Finish :aged open grain with Samans water based stains and flat varnish.
Apllied one coat of black stain sanded to keep it only in the pores the added two coats of Golden Wheath polished with 3M grey pad. Applied four coats of
flat varsish polished with 3M pads between each coat. It has a very nice natural old vibe.
The set up to my taste was very easy, sound and plays great.
Had a lot of fun with this build, thanks Solo to make thes grat kits available.
