great guitar….take your time to build it…all parts that come with the kit are good…..the only problem was that the holes for the bridge were almost the same size. ..this was a bit sloppy and needed to use epoxy to tighten up…I have notified them and let them know…plugged it in and it sounded great…..more kits in the near future…………….

This is a pretty good guitar for the price. Solo was great to deal with in terms of a quick blemish issue and replacement guitar. No complaints here! Only problem I have is figuring out the best way to finish a spalted top. Like the previous reviewer said, be careful with this one because finished properly this has the potential to be a very nice guitar. Mohogany body, half inch or so maple and then a very thin spalted veneer. Should take oil really nicely. Also would suggest from experience you invest in a really good set of locking tuners, rest of the included parts are very good but the tuners are a bit on the cheap side.

Love it. Everything is fitting together perfectly. It’s been a fun project. Look forward to more builds.

Amazing guitar was my first ever kit from SOLO and honestly I play it more than my genuine Gibson Les Paul. All I upgraded were my pickups used StewMac Golden Age Humbuckers then coil tapped it. I left the spalted maple veneer natural just used a little fine steel wool to smooth it out. The body, neck, and headstock were all finished with a gunstock finish. All in all my favorite guitar and I’ve got about 40 in total thank you guys for the lovely quality instruments you produce! 🙂

  5. j.mcksmith

Great kit! Everything fit together perfectly.

I applied multiple coats of Crimson Guitars Finishing Oil and then two coats of poly for a high gloss finish on the spalted maple veneer.
I upgraded the tuners and installed Seymour Duncan Custom SH-5 and ’59 Neck pickups.

The frets needed to be leveled, but that wasn’t completely unexpected.

In hindsight, I would’ve started with a simpler kit (like an ST or TC) and then gone with the set neck version of this guitar.

All in all, I am very pleased with the quality of the kit and how it turned out.

Ordered this guitar and showed up three days later. Wow! Package was perfect and everything looked great. Still in the process of finishing but so far very pleased. Frets were nice and smooth on the ends. If you go for the spalted maple make sure to fill the grain. I used wood dye and tru-oil and there are some low spots that tru-oil just doesn’t fill. Sand the front as little as possible. Thin veneer! Very happy with my purchase. Great company and very responsive if you have a question or concern.

Great kit but the strings were kinda crappy and broke when I started to string and tune it. The tuning mechanics could be better but for the price it is great.

  8. colinmckeage (verified owner)

Decent build. All went together easily and electronics were a breeze. I know they call the finger board “blackwood (engineered rosewood) fingerboard” but it feels like they used some old lodgepole pine found laying on the ground of a mountain forest for 20 years. It’s horrible and I won’t be recommending this particular guitar to anyone. I have other builds from Solo and the necks/fingerboards are great, not sure what happened here.

  9. panamadavey (verified owner)

Impressive kit. The machining of the body/neck is nearly perfect. The parts, with the exception of the tuners and strings, which is to be expected in almost any kit, are also very good. I deducted one star for the following reason: The body is coated with some type of ‘sanding sealer’ which coupled with the thin spalted maple veneer, makes removing it very difficult without damage. This is totally unnecessary in my opinion and the kit would benefit immensely if the top were left bare, (no sealer, filler). If this were not the case a 5 star rating would be a given.

I had a great time building this. Had to deal with a couple of challenges (pre-drilled holes for tuning pegs not large enough, pot wiring wonky) but I learned from it. The guys at Solo are very responsive to questions and speedily deal with any issues that come up. The guitar looks great, sounds amazing, and stays in tune better than my expensive store bought guitars. Looking forward to the next kit.

I would love to give this kit a 5-star rating but I feel I can only do that if everything was perfect. I am going to give you the real deal good and bad with this review. The bad is really not that bad because going into this you do need to realize you are building a kit. As long as you accept that, you will be fine. Let’s get the “bad” out of the way.
The bad: I checked the guitar with a mock build before I started assembly just to make sure the core of the guitar fit (neck was straight, bridge in the right position, etc) but the one thing I missed was the hole for the ground wire attached to the tailpiece. There was none in my particular kit so I had to drill the body for that. Luckily I managed to get the hole in the right spot – right at the bottom of the tailpiece hole. I also had to do a little routing of the bushing holes for the tailpiece and bridge because they were just a bit too tight. Better that way than too loose. I did need a bushing puller to get them out when I had them halfway down in the holes and could not get them any further but I had a friend who had one or you can always do the PVC/washer DIY puller. The only other downside to the kit was the tuners. I thought it may be due to the nut but no … it was the tuners. To fit them, a little drilling was required there also but most importantly, they are just not all that great. Remember … it’s a kit. Tuning up they are fine but tuning down, they are like jello. Not a big deal considering you should always tune up into your not anyway.

The good: The good could be much longer than the bad but I would just say the kit is 95 percent good. If you want a LP style guitar that looks good and you can make it into what you want … get it. Truth be told, I did not use a few of the parts in the kit. I preordered my own Alnico 2 pickups that I could use for split-coil wiring. (The pickups that come with the kit are 2 conductor wire) and I ordered new push-pull pots for the main cavity – get the extra-long if you do the same … the body is pretty thick for a kit which is a good thing. You will have to enlarge the holes for the CTS pots.). Another great thing is that Brad Angove on youtube has a build of this very kit that you can follow along with and change any way you like. Check it out here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ohITs7Ds3G8. He gets a lot of the same questions coming in at him so look through the comments before you shoot him a question even though he is great about answering … even two years after the build. It being my first build I had a lot of questions that were answered in the comments already and I believe around the 4th, 5th or 6th video I summarize all of the steps up to that point to make it easier for everyone else. The other plus was that this was a guitar done by hand. Outside of the drilling that was done, the finish on the body and neck were all done by using brush-on or wipe on products along with some hand sanding. You can obviously do it any way you want to but remember the veneer is ultra thin on it so concerning that area … be careful. I took the guitar to a friend of mine who owns a guitar shop, and obviously repairs and sells guitars, and he was pretty impressed with the quality and the finished product … for a kit build. It sounds lively unplugged, which is usually a good sign that it will sound pretty good plugged in.

I got the guitar as something to do during Covid and it was definitely a fun 2 to 3-week project. I will probably make this a staple guitar in my LP rotation because it does feel good and sound good for what it is. I have more expensive guitars of the same style but there is just something about a guitar you have put together yourself that gives it that extra mojo. If you want a great LP kit … look no further. Even though I am not a tele guy, I will probably do a tele kit next and film it for youtube so there are some nice step by step processes that cover the gotchas and some of the processes that may have been missed in Brad’s and others videos. But all in all, the kit was a fun build and I have another great guitar in the arsenal. Good luck!

So, this was my first ever build. I’d been eyeing a kit for a little over a year, but never felt like I knew enough to tackle the build. So I waited and learned and fiddled with the older guitars I owned until finally I decided to pull the trigger. I’m glad I did.

This kit was just the right level of challenge, and I did have a lot of fun building it. But keep in mind that there will be some things you need to do yourself. Like another reviewer, I had to drill the hole for the ground wire to the tailpiece. I also had to drill some of the pickup ring mounting holes. I didn’t feel comfortable just letting the screws bore their way in. The studs for the bridge and tailpiece were VERY tight going in. In hindsight, I should have maybe opened up those holes a bit more. And finally, the cap is thick at the switch location, so I had to remove material from the inside of the cavity to allow the threads of the switch to accept the nut.

But overall, the kit was great. Everything was straight, and it went together well. My kit came with a bad tuner, which Solo replaced quickly. It also had a stripped saddle at the D string, but I had a spare saddle to swap out. But the finished product has made this the best looking guitar in my stable, at least to my eyes. And the compliments it gets when showing it off are totally worth it.

The important things to keep in mind:
    Take your time.
Don’t force anything with the build.
It’s better to “sleep on it” if you’re getting frustrated with something.
Practice paint/stain on scrap wood first.
Don’t sweat the imperfections. No guitar or finish is ever perfect.
You’re not building the best guitar in the world, or even the best guitar you own. Just have fun with the build, and make something that’s 100% your own.

This is a great kit, I did buy the optional black kit and this is the reason for the 4/5 instead of the 5/5 stars – some of the black kit parts did not fit, which was disappointing. In any case, I learned a lot, I essentially followed Bran Angove’s Spalted Maple build videos (https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLmqF8bx6h1nImH9txOD2F8dFsqDocrbbE). I upgraded several of the parts. but it’s a very nice guitar now.

I purchased 2 of these kits and was very pleased at the quality of the parts and speed of the delivery. I replaced the tuners with Grover locking tuners but everything else was good quality parts. The wiring diagram was easy to read and both guitars played good when they were complete as well as looking amazing. I look forward to my next build.
