Best bang for the buck ? As far as I’m concerned. Ordered on line on a Monday and showed up Friday afternoon. On time for Christmas. Will definitely buy more from SOLO. When this project is done ✅

Ordered May 4th, received on the 7th. Can’t complain about delivery. Everything packaged nicely, all parts are there, neck and body are beautiful and require very little prep. Will definitely buy again. Highly recommend.

I have to say that I was very pleased with the quality of the kit. It only took 4 days for it to arrive, and it was well packaged, which is great because Fed Ex mangled the box, but the kit was undamaged, so big props there. The only issues I have are that I would like some assembly pictures in the manual, and the wiring diagram, to be honest is very bad. This is my first guitar build so I know nothing about the wiring… But to be clear, very pleased with the kit good quality, just minor issues for the first time builder. I will buy from them again.

Had a blast putting this one together. Nice alder body, not sure how I will finish it. Took a while to get the neck the to the standards I like, but, now the action is really good, torsion rod adjustment was not extreme, just a few frets needed leveling and the “fall” enhanced just a tad.
Man, I can shred and riff away on this thing. The Floyd Rose style stuff is great. I get the strings locked down and they resist detuning big time. Balancing the bridge is the hardest part, but, that’s the design. The kit’s hardware was surprisingly good since this hardware sold alone from some suppliers can be near the price of the kit.
I really like how you can take all the tension out of the strings by fully depressing the whammy bar, trapping something under the raised rear of the bridge piece to hold it in place and then taking off the neck. Do some work on the electronics, put the pick guard back on, screw on the neck, remove the item under the back of the bridge piece and bingo the guitar is in magically in tune and ready to go!

So first time buying a DIY kit and I tell ya I loved every minute of putting this wonderful guitar together . and I don’t want to paint it I just want to clear coat the thing its so pretty with the natural wood and the gold hardware .It went together nicely and turned out amazing and sounds amazing . I only had to adjust the truss rod a little for my playing likes and as one of the other buyers stated the wiring diagram not good at all . Luckily I have a book that covers almost every wiring configuration possible so I looked in there and wah la I was up and jamming in no time flat. ..I just love everything about it . And for the money you can’t get a better guitar it plays and sounds as good as any of my Gibson’s /Charvel’s /fenders …I am a little scared to try and clear coat it I am not a good wood worker but we are gonna give it a try thank you for an amazing product and I will be ordering again I think the SG will be my next project ……fingers_fhillips 2020

A great client of mine requested that I build his son a JEM style ax for his birthday. The kid is a signed artist and about to go back on tour less one ax due to it being stolen. Not giving me enough time to build it from scratch, a You-tuber friend told me to try a Solo kit. He built a Solo JazzM and shows it to be to a standard that I could deal with for this build, so I did.

The order went through like lightening and got to me far quicker than I expected, but then there was an issue with the body, and the neck. I called Solo, got Dave who is their under paid (in my opinion) Customer Care Expert. I explained the body issue preventing me from moving forward on this time sensitive build, and Dave handled it all, immediately. Dave had a new body coming my way the next day, and it arrived like 2 days later. Unfortunately, we had some other issues, and Dave handled them just as quickly, and now we are moving forward again.

The main issue, as not to scare anyone away or leave it to your sorted imaginations, there was a cracking issue in the body. Yes, with 99.9% of all solid body Gtrs that see limited use and never leave the house, I could have drilled & filled and been fairly confident it would not turn into a do-over. But, no way can I do that with a professional musicians touring gtr. They see WAY too many weather changes and clumsy roadies.

Additionally, that crack could have occurred in transit due to weather changes between Solo, and my place.

The moral of this sorted tale you ask? Or, maybe you didn’t but here it is anyway; Of all my years building and dealing with mfgrs and suppliers, EVEN when their product was defective, not once have I dealt with a company that was so quick to please the client. AND…….AT NO additional cost to the client! I’m sure Dave doesn’t make the final decisions on what to cover, and or, not cover, so, hat-tip to the Solo owner. Solo has the best customer service, bar none, and again, whatever Dave is being paid, it’s NOT enough!

The entire world’s population would do well by taking an E-Course on how not to be a$$holes, from Dave. In fact, Dave may be the reason why the world believes that all Canadians are so nice! Hats-off to your parents as well, Dave! ;-)/

So yes, I will be returning to Solo for such future builds.
    Thanks guys
    R

    I tend to agree with the ‘first time builder’ comment issues. Mostly electrical issues. You can build this kit and play it but I would suggest that if you aren’t a professional-get a professional setup. I was very pleased with the packaging along with the careful storage of all hardware and contents. This guitar is now hanging on my wall and putting my long and mcquade bought guitars to absolute shame. Solo music has a great thing going and I would highly recommend someone doing this as a project. Even if you just want the stain it and leave the rest to someone else-it’s going to be a very satisfying feeling in the end. My two regrets are as followed;
1 – if you do a two toned stain to try and expose the lower grain with dark and the upper grain with light, don’t mess with it after you’ve done your light coat. Be happy with your initial result.

2 – I used a Matte finish instead of a gloss. I thought it would look better but everyone’s gloss results really compliment their builds.

    Cheers,

Fantastic, everything fit great on the kit! it looks beautiful and sounds awesome! Easy to build with a basic knowledge of wiring (all I have is introduction to electrical from Grade 10 in 2005) and going on youtube to find woodworking techniques, you just need to be relatively handy. It was a fun project especially on quarantine. Don’t be discouraged if you live in a condo/ apartment I do and I just did my sanding in the bathtub and cleaned up properly afterwards just make sure you have somewhere airy to let any stains/ varnish dry. I used unicorn spit for stain since I wanted wood grain and couldn’t find the colors I wanted in traditional stain it worked out quite well in spite of the fact I didn’t read the instructions.

TLDR – kit is great will buy again from solo.

WOW… I am so impressed with the quality and style of this kit. I’m equally impressed with the playability and the sound the finished guitar produces. I expected having to swap out the pickups (based on the horrible pickups in my first kit from a competitor of Solo). But after completing the build and setup, it sounds great and I see no need to upgrade.

The body and the neck were flawlessly crafted, and fit together perfectly. The ash body has beautiful grain…I finished it with wipe-on gloss poly (no stain), and it looks really nice. The gold hardware and vine inlay on the fretboard really make this guitar stand out. All parts were present and in perfect condition.

The Floyd Rose tremolo is very cool! This was my first guitar build with a tremolo, and the Floyd Rose was a little tricky because of its floating nature. But after watching a few videos, I was able to do this myself with no problems.

The only negative I would have is that I’m not a fan of the placement of the switch. It tends to get in the way when strumming. This is the same problem I have with Strats. No doubt an issue with my technique. Someday I’m going to make a new pickguard from wood veneer, and see if I can rearrange the switch and knobs just a bit.

Bottom line, this is simply a top notch kit that I highly recommend. Out of 5 kits I’ve had, this is the best.

I am SMITTEN with this guitar… While it wasn’t easy, it was completely worth it in the end. Believe it or not, I had given up on the guitar, everything seemed wrong. But then I got it setup right, and my goodness, I love it. You’ll need the same basic tools that you’d need for any guitar build. See end of post.

My neck and body paired fine. The neck was my biggest area of concern. It seemed a bit twisted, and the frets were pretty clouded up with very minor spots of rust. It took me completely loosening the truss rod to get the neck straight. Using a neck checker from iLouis on amazon (16ish$) I finally got it straight. Next I used the iLouis fret checker to mark the high frets for filing down. I actually needed to file down 1/3 of the frets, which was pretty tedious. After crowning and finishing, my neck was complete. The wood and pearl inlays were gorgeous, and the frets now looked significantly shinier.

Next I had to get the electronics figured out. I think this component is a pretty big weak point in the kit, and the one thing you should definitely upgrade. Part of the Jem’s trademark functionality is having split coil pickups. The pickups included are non-splitting, simple 2 wire humbuckers. The switch included is also NOT a coil splitting switch. Which is confusing, as it looks like it. The included 7 pin switch does not support coil splits, and is made for simple 2 wire pickups. Both of these components should be upgraded. I got a set of 4 wire Fleor pickups on amazon (20$) that sound great and can be split. Next I got a standard 8 pin switch (10$). These parts are a nice upgrade from what was included in the kit.

So after the electronics, it was time to get the floyd rose set up. This was the part I was most worried about. After watching way more videos than I should’ve, I tried installing it. Dont worry, its not that big of a deal. Best advice is to screw the claw screws in about half way, then put a ruler or some other strap material underneath the tremelo to block it. Get the floyd PARELLEL to the body. This is the key to having a floyd that stays in tune. Dont bother putting the locking nuts on for a few days until you get the spring tension perfect. If you lock your strings and find that when using the fine tuners, everytime you fine tune one string and get it right, another string is pulled sharp or flat, this is TEXTBOOK signal that your spring tension isnt right and your body isnt perfectly parallel.

Next was shimming the floyd’s bridge saddles height. The standard floyd comes with preset saddle height for a 10″ radius. The Wizard neck in this kit is much flatter than the standard floyd (16-17″), so you will need to add spacers to the low E and A strings as well as the high B and E strings. You can use a soda/beer can to cut out the saddle shims. Each piece you cut out is .1mm thick. My neck needed .5mm (5 shims) on the high E string, .2mm on the high B, then .3mm on the low A, and .8mm on the low E.

Before I got my floyd balanced, I wrote this guitar off as an experiment I wouldnt use after building. WRONG. I thought the floyd rose would throw out of tune everytime I hit the whammy bar. WRONG The jumbo frets didnt feel good at all at first, seemed like I had to push them softly or I would push the notes sharp. WRONG. Now that I have the floyd rose balanced, IT ALL FEELS AMAZING. I LOVE my jumbo frets, and I LOVE my floyd.

I left the wood unstained. I liked the look of it so much, I simply added a mohawk vinyl sealer layer, and left it at that. If I want to add a stain later, I always can. But for now, I love the raw wood look on the pearl pickguard. I also bought 12 gold pole screws for the pickups so I could get some more gold hardware on the pickups.

The truss rod included is very unlike the Ibanez’s, so I bought a sheet of pearl veneer to cut out a correct dimensioned truss rod cover.

    I LOVE THIS GUITAR.

    Parts needed/upgrades:
    1. fretboard checker (16$, need)
    2. fret level checker (8$, need)
    3. triangle file for filing and crowning frets (8$, need)
    4. fret guards for filing (5$ highly recommended, files will go through masking tape)
    5. Fleor or any other 4 wire pickups (recommended, 20$)
    6. 8 blade switch for coil splitting (recommended, 10$)
    7. Cosmetics, gold pickup pole screws from philly luthier supplies (10$), pearl truss rod cover (7$), gold string retainer bar (5$).

I would not hesitate to buy this IF you have the patience to get the floyd rose installed right. Its not hard, it just requires watching some youtube videos. If you do this guitar right, you will NOT regret it. Sounds and plays much better than my $500 epiphone special.

I personally love this guitar, it sounds great, it looks great, and the only problems that I had with the it was the wiring diagram that they gave me. (A better one can be found in the manuals and videos section in the drop down menu at the top). The other problem that I had was that the bridge cavity was cut incorrectly and I had to sand it down with a dremel. Also, if you’re excepting a real floyd rose bridge out of this think again. The words that were engraved in mine said “licensed under floyd rosd pats” and yes “rosd” wasnt a typo. Overall though it sounds good and the fake floyd rose plays decently well.

This was my third Solo kit and all of them have been great and this one is no exception. This Jem kit was very well done. The neck inlays are very nice and people complement them. The tremolo system works great and the guitar sounds great. It took a bit more time adjusting the neck pickup height to get it to my liking but it is there now. I did a 2 tone blue dye and a polyurethane top coat and it came out nice but not perfect. (still learning the finishing) The only negative I can think of is the tremolo arm will loosen with use. I haven’t tried to addressed that yet but will soon. Over all it is a great quality kit.

This was my first Solo kit , a B stock item with a minor chip under the fingerboard near the neck joint , minor in my case , never see it .
Went together rather easily , kind of figured out the wiring as I went , preferring the humbuckers to the single coil , I modified the wiring for now , swapping the middle and neck pup locations at the five way switch , I’ve tried many Ibanez JEM and yeah I like the combinations with the Strat sound but the volume difference is huge even on the Ibanez JEM so for now I’ll prefer three main combinations , bridge , neck and bridge , and neck . If I want a Strat out of phase sound eventually I’ll look for an SD quarter pounder or something with some kick to keep up , possibly RW/RP as well to cancel the hum , would that work ? Not sure as these HB pups the kit comes with can’t be coil split , anyways , small potatoes , I find the neck plays great , I like the size and chunkiness of it. My whammy was bent in too shallow of an angle I found so I concocted a visa workaround to clamp the base of the bar with the nut on it to get some kind of useful bend that brings the whey closer to the body . I find the taper on the volume pot pretty nice for rolling off gain , however it’s not a speed knob by any means so playing Cathedral with the volume knob isn’t likely . All in all it’s well worth the money and comes licit split fast as I’m just next door to Ontario for shipping . I made a short you tube video showing off the resulting build …. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f4Zo40jt5tc

This was my first guitar kit build. Let me first say that support for questions etc was simply awesome.
The kit arrived in perfect conditions with no blemishes. I knew the body was multiple glued pieces so my plan was to paint it rather than stain it. The body needed some sanding, grain filling especially on the end grain. I learned so much about consumer spray paints but finally found a primer paint and clear coat that produced basically near store bought smoothness and shine.
I finished neck with osmo oil and it came out perfect.
All the pre drilled holes were spot on and the neck lined up perfectly.

At this price, I suspect the margins are low and so they need to sell a very basic quality hardware. I knew this going in. My comment here is that I wanted to put my own choice of pickups. The tuners are passable because there is a locking nut, but have too much backlash to work on their own without a locking nut. I am using the included Floyd rose knock but the fine tuners are not super precise. But work well enough.

The back plate fits over the body cavity like some strats, but if I had the skills I would router out the edges of the cavity so the cover would be flush with the back of the body. Not sure if solo would consider pre- routing this ?

Overall. I highly recommend this kit. Solo support is awesome. I learned a ton doing this and I am extremely happy with the result. The guitar plays perfectly. I have been able to set it up exactly to my taste . I just picked up a second kit from solo with flame maple to to try a stained burst.

    Kit arrived very quickly
I’d say ur definetly paying for what u get and u have to remember that.
The bridge, nut and tuners are low quality and are definetly usable just not enjoyable. I highly reccomende u buy a 1996t as a replacement bridge
Build will require a fret dress. At least on mine the fret ends are a little sharp (nothing horrible) and the 23rd and 24th fret dont ring properly.
I also recevied no E string in the kit and just 2 A or D strings I honestly cant tell (theyre not labeled)
I also received a staggered tuner? This dosent affect the build but its still weird.
Overall im pretty satisfied with the build since its my first but ill definetly be getting a new bridge.

  16. painfulart21 (verified owner)

I assembled the guitar to test fit everything, and I must say fitment is pretty good, it even stays in tune, I am however very disappointed with the fret board, the rosewood is so light you can barely see the vine inlays!!
