The Mule has a classic ‘Patent Applied For’ vintage tone with exceptionally balanced frequency response and more than enough power for almost any application.
The Mule humbuckers are built and voiced as faithful reproductions of the best sounding late ’59 PAFs with a differing number of turns of vintage correct 42 AWG plain enamel wire on each coil. The result is outstanding clarity and extended dynamic range. The solid nickel silver baseplate and cover are exact replicas along with the butyrate bobbins, maple spacers, nickel-plated slugs and Fillister no.5 pole screws. Sand cast Alnico IV magnets give The Mule faster response in the bass, fuller mids and better control in the high end. Even at low levels of gain, smooth harmonic feedback which is full of overtones is possible, while clean sounds have depth and unmistakable vintage character. The idea of these pickups is to have a vocal tone that’s expressive and clear, while driving amps commandingly into overdrive when required.
The Mule humbuckers are suitable for all solid-body guitars, semi-acoustic and hollow-body guitars especially single cut/glued neck styles; any guitar that would benefit from a more even frequency response and improved dynamics.

I’ve got LPs and other guitars with Fralin and Wolfetone, along with stock Gibsons of various types. Without question, The Mule is my favourite all-round PAF. All the boutique winders are good, but there’s just some little extra bit of sauce with BKP. I think it’s because they are more driven by the tone than by the perfect authenticity of the construction alone. I’m very happy to see that Solo (my go-to online guitar dealer) is bringing them into Canada.

I was recommended by a friend to check out Bare Knuckle Pickups and after reviewing the various option on their website, I decided the Mule’s would provide the tone I am looking for in my 1980 Les Paul Standard. The pickups that were in the guitar we dead and lifeless and thus the guitar didn’t inspire me. After dropping in the Mule’s the guitar came to life. The pickups are extremely responsive and provide a great classic rock tone. Thanks to Solo guitars for bringing these pickups into Canada!
