When you first play a guitar with a Free-Way switch, you might not even realize it is there – the guitar doesn’t look any different and the pickup selector feels just like a normal 3-way toggle giving Neck/Both/Bridge selections. It’s only when you realize that the Free-Way switch moves into another three forward positions that you understand what the Free-Way is all about.
The Free-Way switch was first used on stage in December 2007 during Led Zeppelin’s Ahmet Ertegun Tribute Concert where the new Gibson® Jimmy Page Les Paul® Custom was featured during an incredible performance of “For Your Life”

The Free-Way Ultra is a 6 Position switch but with an amazing 28 terminal connections for creating the most sophisticated circuits. Each of the 6 positions is accessible and can have almost any pickup arrangement you choose! The Free-Way Ultra enables pickups (or coils) to be connected in series, in parallel and out of phase with each other so that complex switching functions can be performed all in one place. The Free-Way Ultra looks and operates exactly like the other models and, measuring 35mm in diameter, it is still very compact and retro-fittable into most guitars.
