I’ve been upgrading a few guitars recently, and the Graph Tech PT-7004-00 Black TUSQ XL Sleek String Trees have been one of those small changes that make a surprisingly big difference.
Compared to traditional stamped-metal string trees, the TUSQ XL trees significantly reduce friction at the contact point, allowing the strings to move much more freely during bends, tremolo use, and tuning adjustments. The self-lubricating TUSQ XL material does exactly what it’s designed to do—minimize string binding and improve tuning stability.
Installation was straightforward, and the low-profile black finish gives the headstock a clean, modern look without drawing unnecessary attention. They feel well-made, and the design provides consistent downward pressure on the strings while eliminating many of the tuning issues commonly associated with conventional string retainers.
The improvement was especially noticeable on my Strat-style guitar equipped with a tremolo system. Strings return to pitch more reliably after vibrato use, and tuning stability during aggressive bends is noticeably better. Open strings also seem to ring out more clearly, likely due to the reduced friction and smoother string path.
While string trees aren’t usually the most exciting upgrade, the PT-7004-00 is a well-engineered component that solves a real problem. If you’re looking to optimize tuning stability, reduce string binding, and add a touch of refinement to your setup, these are an inexpensive upgrade that delivers far more value than their price suggests.
