The holder does make it easier to hold the thinner gauge files, but the bulkiness it adds blocks your view and gets in the way when filing a nut installed on a guitar.
You can use the thicker gauges without the holder, but if you go that way, it’s much better to get the other files listed on this site.
I purchased a few of the other files, and found that they are much better than these. Filing an installed nut is much easier with the other files and you can clearly see what you are doing.
