Guitar Of The Month – March, 2018

Written by: Kevin Strom On: Apr 4th, 2018

Congratulations goes out to Steve Leigh for his guitar build, to earn him Guitar of the Month for March 2018.

Steve upgraded his TCK-1SM guitar with a Tusq nut, black Solo hardware pack and Fender Tex-Mex pickups

“I used about 25 coats of tru-oil. 2-3 coats a day on the neck and front of the body for a mirror gloss. I applied it with a lint free rag and sanded with steel wool every couple coats. The back side and edges have about 15 coats of tru-oil but kept it a satin finish.  I used a transparent black acrylic paint and air brushed a very light burst to give a weathered/antique look to it, including the head stock.

I had the neck plate engraved with my tattoo company name as well as vinyl headstock decal.

I’m very pleased with the quality and fit.  I own 13 other guitars and this is now one of my favorites!”

Nice finish with those oil coatings, never tried that before, worth considering for a gloss finish without multi poly coats.I recently built a kit and used a gel stain on body, neck and head stock, then used 4 gel top coats for a satin finish.Gel products are easy to work with, don’t run like liquid minwax stains.
