Description

Oxford Supply Co specializes in traditional Nitrocellulose Lacquer for guitar builders, finishers, DIY’ers, kit builders, refinishers and repairs.

Our nitro is matched to some of the most classic guitar finishes from Gibson, Fender and others.

After much research and testing, we are pleased to now offer our Vintage Formula Clear Gloss Lacquer.

We’ve worked closely with a long time lacquer manufacturer to reformulate a blend of Nitrocellulose Lacquer that offers the most desired qualities, specific to instrument makers and players.

The result is a finish that dries very hard and thin – prone to cold weather checking and ambering over time.

These items are only available to ship to the United States and Canada.

**Please note that due to the nature of the product, only Standard Ground shipping is available and will automatically be reflected at checkout.

Creates a great gloss effect and feels nice and smooth.
My favourite lacquer supplier so far!

  2. paul.cummings.montreal (verified buyer)

Good coverage, sprays well (they give 2 spray heads), dries fast. Might need 2 cans for a really glossy finish. Flat sanding it was easy as it sprays very flat and even

Buffs out beautifully and just glows!

Simply the best canned vintage formula nitrocellulose lacquer available in the entire world! It’s a pleasure to work with this lacquer! I recommend you do warm the can up in hot water! It’s easy to artificially age and to get the cracking effect using the regular methods. Over time it yellows nicely, I’m gonna try and see if my grow lights can speed up the yellowing effect! Great lacquer if you’re looking for these qualities, I highly recommend it!

I’ll preface this by saying that I was a beginner when using this stuff. With that said, from previous finishing experience on other projects, I found this nitro spray to be pretty forgiving. Can’t comment on its aging/checking and other wear, but it does finish super hard. Shines up really nicely and feels great in hand (hard to explain, but it has just kind of a vintage-y feel to it). 2.5 weeks was sufficient for me in getting it super hard, albeit, it was in a relatively small closet that had a fan continuously running the whole time.

I used about two cans on a neck, and I’ll warn those who are finishing maple fretboards, this spray really adhered to my frets. Virtually impossible to get the lacquer off with just a sharp plastic pick, and it doesn’t come off very cleanly either. Maybe explore using other removal techniques over the conventional ones you see on YouTube and/or leave the lacquer on and let the strings wear it down over time.
