I came across the Solo pro website and was impressed by its content. The site struck me as very professional. Seems like a very “hands on” operation. I’ve been looking for a stage ready tele for a while and was interested in the rosewood fingerboard single/single models Solo has to offer. I was happy seeing the 3 pc. brass saddle tailpiece, Tusq nut, Wilkinson pups, 12.5 fingerboard radius and 2 way truss rod. Free shipping, gig bag, return policy and affordable price point. I ordered the seafoam green model and it arrived in about 5 days. I would have preferred Butterscotch with black guard, but that doesn’t come in single/single with rosewood.
After having it a few weeks now, here is my review.
1….overall setup was very good. After about 3 days I took off the strings, polished the frets with 220/440/880 rubber stones and oiled the fretboard. I put on a new set of 10s, gave the truss rod about a sixteenth of a turn to put a bit more relief in the neck. The neck was almost dead flat from the shop. I prefer a bit of up bow. The truss rod worked predictably, giving the desired result. Very reassuring. I then adjusted string height and intonation. For having only 3 saddles, the guitar intonates very well. I was happy about that. The bridge system seems very stable….no buzzing. Seems dependable/ consistent.
The neck has stayed stable since my adjustments. Very happy about that. Guitar stays in tune nicely once you do a few bends. Tuning settled down after an hour or so.
2…. I like the sound of the pickups. Was unsure, being described as “ceramic”, which sometimes gets a rap of being spikey/sharp/tinny…not so! The neck position has a great sound, turn the tone back a bit and you get a jazzy tone. The middle position gets the typical tele cluckyness….very nice. The bridge position might be a bit spikey, but if I roll off a bit of treble at the tone knob it calms down. Great for country chicken pickin. So, overall, the pups sound very very good. I don’t get a lot of 60cycle hum…pretty good for single coils. in fact, if I’m not mistaken, the middle position might be wired in a “hum cancelling” manner. Very quiet.
3….neck feels wonderful, tuning keys are fine, fret ends are fine. We’ll see what a year of Chicago weather does as far as fret sprout. Hey, I get fret sprout on my Gibson, Hamer and Ibanez over time. I own luthier tools to file that sprout away. Strings are nicely centered along the neck. Feels like a quality assembly. Hang tag says assembly was done by Océ (Japan?), final inspected by Alex.
So, my gut feeling that these guitars are well made was correct. I sense there is attention to detail both at assembly overseas and in Canada before shipping. Overall a very good experience.
