I highly recommend these SOLO Pro Nut Seating files – 5 stars!
Great files! I ordered two of these nut seating files from SOLO – 3/16” and 1/8”. These two sizes will take care of pretty much all Fender and Gibson guitars, and all similar guitars. They are super well made, and they are quite hefty. You don’t need to apply extra pressure; just carefully file out leftover glue or debree/burrs from the nut slot once you’ve removed an old nut. After a few careful swipes, you’re done – the nut slot is ready for the new nut. I also have great success using the fine-toothed edge of the file to eliminate any nut overhang or protrusion (after taping off the immediate area around the nut so as to not mar the neck or headstock). The handle feels smooth and comfortable; the overall balance of the tool in your hand is immediately familiar and tactilely pleasant.
FYI – a little birdie told me that many of the latest “SOLO Pro” tools (such as these files) are sourced from the same tool makers that the Stew guys get theirs from. *Wink.
How perfectly marvellous! We Canucks can finally acquire more and more top-notch, pro-grade tools, for reasonable prices, right here at home in Canada. It’s gradually becoming less and less necessary to pay Stew guys’ great big prices, or their exorbitant “International” shipping rates. As a case in point, I recently had to buy a particular, specific set of Kluson Revolution G tuners for my Gibson Les Paul that I could only find at StewMac; SOLO doesn’t carry them, and neither did Long & McQuade have them. The actual price of the tuners wasn’t bad (under $90 CAD), but after the HUGE shipping rate was added on, and then tariff/duty fees, the tuners ended up costing me about 50+ percent more!
SOLO doesn’t quite yet offer everything a guitar tech/luthier needs, but they are definitely gaining a lot of ground. I’m excited to see our SOLO gang keep on keepin’ on, and (hopefully) building a larger and larger selection of good “stuff”. SOLO’s personnel are the best in the biz – they take care of their customers, big time!
So obviously I’ve become a SOLO fanboy. Well, you’re darn tootin’ I am; I’m proud of SOLO and I’m rootin’ with all my heart for the company to continue realizing great success in the coming months and years. To wrap this up, all the latest additions to SOLO’s tools inventory, such as these SOLO PRO nut seating files, are every bit as good (and perhaps even identical in some cases) to those that the Mega Stew guys sell. We still need an Erlewine-esque neck jig and a fractal fret press added to the fray though. *Grin.
Ps. I’m not anti-StewMac or anti-USA. As a matter of fact, if I lived in the USA, I’d be very glad to always shop for gidgets, gadgets and toolery on the StewMac web store. They offer excellent quality, and lifetime no-questions-asked guarantees on their most of their products. However, I am Canadian and I thank the good Lord above that we have SOLO Music workin’ hard to offer/supply us with *most of the things we need right here at home. Long, long decades before anybody put their “elbows up” or otherwise, I’ve been a patriot. I’m thankful and proud to support and promote SOLO Music. Unlike another mega music product retailer here in Canada, SOLO’s personnel have a really cool, humble-but-expert vibe. Every single time I’ve ever had to call or email SOLO, I was treated as though I were the most important customer ever. Mind you, I try to never be one of those pain-in-the-noodle whiny tire kickers that gets on everyone’s nerves. *Grin.
SOLO’s prices are reasonable. We all know that the current state of ‘inflated’ inflation and political distress is off the charts. Nowadays, everybody’s gouging the biggest prices they can for every little thing. That said, I find that the SOLO gang does its best keep prices set reasonably, and the company’s shipping rates are acceptable.
