BrotherCharles (verified buyer) –
This is a very good quality file – every bit as good as those sold by the big Mac crowd, south of the border. *wink.
This SOLO Pro Triangle file cuts gently, but effectively. The file’s safe edges make it a lot . . . well, “safer”, greatly reducing the chance that a novice (or a careless, rushed tech) will accidentally shinozzle innocent, unsuspecting fret board edges.
I use tri-corner files for lots of chores: shaping nuts, filing down newly installed nut overhang, and of course, fret crowning. Sometimes, you just can’t beat a tri-corner file for achieving nice ‘thin line’ crowns. While I do like my diamond-coated fancy-schmancy crowning files, sometimes this kind of old skool tool-of-the-trade turns a good crown into a great crown! Providing one has the requisite experience and skill, a high quality tri-corner file like this one is indispensable for achieving excellent, pro-grade results.
Practice makes perfect. If you haven’t the experience or skill (yet), perhaps practice on an old cheap, beater guitar; see if you have the knack for it. Not everyone is cut out for intricate or delicate guitar tech/luthier work: it is a specialized skill. But, if you do have the raw talent and aptitude for this kind of work, honing your ability to effectively wield this kind of file will allow it to become one of your secret fret weapons. 😉
Ps.
Remember to keep the file clean and unclogged. I suggest that you go ahead and snag one of SOLO’s nifty little brass file brushes; they work a treat.
5 stars, highly recommended!
