Description

Oxford Supply Co specializes in traditional Nitrocellulose Lacquer for guitar builders, finishers, DIY’ers, kit builders, refinishers and repairs.

Our nitro is matched to some of the most classic guitar finishes from Gibson, Fender and others.

All aerosols come with two tips under the cap:
White Fan Tip – Produces a wide vertical fan pattern which mimics a spray gun, atomizing the lacquer at a very fine level. This tip is preferred for most applications for its consistent output, easy of use, and quick coverage. Recommended for spraying Sealer, Primer, Clear Coats and solid colors.

Red Cone Tip – Delivers a more focused, traditional, circular aerosol pattern. Very useful for spraying hard to reach areas like cutaways. Also allows for more control in spraying patterns such as sunbursts or headstock faces.

These items are only available to ship to the United States and Canada.

**Please note that due to the nature of the product, only Standard Ground shipping is available and will automatically be reflected at checkout.

Basically, this is great lacquer for a guitar. It feels, sounds, sprays ‘thinner’ than the product I get from Stew-Mac, all of which is good, because you want to put several thin coats on instead of one thick one. A trick I use with Stew-Mac is to fill a small crockpot 3/4 full of water, heat it up, put the spray can in and thus heat the paint. You can hear the paint thin out by the way the rattle ball rattles. The heated lacquer sprays into a much finer mist, settles evenly and then smooths out over the surface more quickly. The unheated Oxford product sounds and sprays like the heated Stew-Mac product. I will continue to heat the Oxford none-the-less, but it just feels like a finer grade of Lacquer. The color coverage is surprising for how thin the lacquer is.

    Operationally, Oxford is great.

I’m deducting one point for the reason that I’m trying to match the pure white of my pickguard on the face of my headstock. Pure white Nitrocellulose is a damn hard thing to come by. This is the whitest, short of a brand from the UK that would cost $150 a can by the time shipping charges are included, that I could find. It is not pure white, and you can just tell the difference between the pickguard and the headstock if you look for it. This is just a bit of creamy off-white.

To be fair, the color example on the site page shows that, but the name of the product is ‘Arctic White’ which is generally reserved for pure white. So it’s a bit misleading if all you have to go by is a text description. If you are gonna call your product Arctic White, make it be a pure white, white.

That bit of semantics and aesthetics aside, Oxford seems a great product and I will use again for other colors.

I am not knocking Stew Max as I do a lot of shopping there but this lacquer is awesome! Not one “burn through” after clear coat and great finish! Super happy and I will be back!
