This is my 13th kit from Solo and again it was a fast and very well packaged delivery. I did put a note in my order asking Solo to pick a kit with a nice wood grain and well done joints on the body as I was planning to do an aged translucent white wash finish. I am sure they did as I received a perfect body, the grain looks great and the joints are invisible. Thanks Solo for the special attention. The body to neck joint is just perfect, snug fit, no gap and aligned with the bridge. The neck is dead straight, frets well levelled and only needed minor polishing.
Modifications:
Body, cut the neck pocket to install a custom Solo custom neck plate for better high frets access, carved an arm rest and a belly cut.
Neck, did plug one hole and drilled a new one for the custom neck plate, added radius to the headstock sharp points, polished the frets. Filed down the nut slots to my taste.
Bridge, changed the sustain block to a short full size solid steel block and the tremolo arm with imperial threads to match.
Pickups, installed a pair of alnico humbucker sized lipsick.
Controls, all pots are brass 3/8”sleeves and brass shafts, volumes are push push A500K for coil split with added 1.1 K resistor to keep some signal from the cut coil (less volume drop). Tones are B500K.
Tuners, Wilkinson from Solo vintage style 19:1 ratio. These are very smooth and accurate at a fair price.
Finishing: Using Samans water based stains and flat varnish.
Body, after sanding I applied 1 coat of Golden Weath for a base color and sanded it off to reveal the grain and added 2 coats of White. Sanded with 3M grey pad between each coat. Applied 4 coats of flat varnish, also sanded with 3M grey pad between each coat.
Neck, Applied 1 coat of Dark Oak on the neck, back and sides of the headstock. The headstock face is black. Then added 4 coats of flat varnish. Same sanding as the body.
The final assembly and setup were a breeze thanks to the great fit of all the parts.
She looks and plays fantastic, a real keeper.
Thanks again Solo for the fun modding kits and first class service.
