Description

If you’ve ever needed to change the angle of your guitar neck you’ve probably used some form of a shim.  That could be maple wood shims or even business cards. The problem with standard shims is that depending on the angle you need, these create a gap between the neck and the neck pocket. Many often feel because there’s not full contact, that there’s a lack in tone and sustain.

With our tapered shims, you can achieve the right angle of degree while completely covering the neck pocket.

Available in 0.25 degree, 0.50 degree & 1 degree

*Shim taper measurements are approximate and may have a  +/- 0.01 or 0.02mm variance.

Nice! The price beats StewMac’s, and the shipping is a lot more affordable here in Canada.

My father died in January of 2015, and one of the musical items I inherited from him was a home made Strat style guitar he made himself. He bought the large slab of ash from a millwright shop; he cut, shaped, and routed it himself. He bought a WD Strat neck (licensed by Fender). He was n a pretty tight senior’s budget so he sourced “affordable” electronics and parts, all of which I’ve upgraded with CTS, Switchcraft, CRL, and so forth. I also put on a TUSQ nut and Tusq XL string guides.

My father needed to shim the neck, but he only used a couple strips of thin, non-compressing plastic. It did the job, but we all know that it wasn’t exactly a luthier’s choice of material. My late father did a decent job of fret levelling, dressing and crowning, but there were a few spots that needed some professional TLC. As such, I unbolted the neck and sent it off to my good buddy, and guitar tech guru, James Adams in North Bay On. James performed his usual magic and made the fretboard feel like a $5000 custom shop board. I figured that since the neck needs shimming, I really ought to put a proper wooden shim in the pocket. Since StewMac is so famous and has hundreds of videos online, that was the first place I looked online for pre-cut shims. But oh man! The prices were kinda steep and the shipping rates were pretty high. I couldn’t find pre-cut shims on Long-McQuade’s web site. Then it dawned on me, maybe SOLO Music would have what I needed. Sure enough, they do indeed carry neck shims in their catalogue. Thanks, SOLO!

The price was acceptable, and the shipping rates are easier to swallow than StewMac’s (coming from the USA). As regards the actual product, the two SOLO Music shims I bought were very nicely tapered and pre-drilled perfectly to match up with Fender neck pockets. I had to trim the shim I used a little bit, but it was easy to do with a razor sharp exacto knife.

I’ve ordered various items from SOLO Music a few times now – I am becoming a big fan. As a matter of fact, instead of running over to the StewMac web site right away, I now look on the SOLO web site first. That said, Stew Mac does make a lot of really cool, niche tools and gadgets, so I will always appreciate Stew Mac. Nevertheless, if I can get what I need from SOLO, I do my shopping from them.

Well myself ordered 3 1°angled shims. Which where needed to help lower action and make able to better intonate. 2 where Maestro Gibson Les Paul Jr. And 1 1979 Lark les Paul copy with Gibson lawsuit headstock.
I have taken all 3 and made into guitar scale bass guitars. From pickups, tuners, strings and heavy customized to bass. Might call a Tenor like old time parlor guitars with 4 strings. Shims worked out great. Everything excepted went as planned.
All come delivered quickly safely and with care and concern for those fragile pieces. If needed again would’ve back. Prices can’t be beat. Singles or kits all do the job needed.
And with all those customizations added Solo homemade decals to each if their customized individual guitar case. Telling the world that these shims where used on them. Glad to have found their site. Now have a account so easier when the needed ever comes back to just check in and place order. All in all was great experience.

These really* are tapered neck shims, unlike the garbage one can buy on Temu and similar merchants. Using those as opposed to metal shims also makes the correction more durable (no metal prints on the wood, the contact surface is larger which is great for sustain). it simply sounds much better to me and also you have a greater control on the angle.
