Just received the guitar. I got it in no time at all. A couple of working days. I am very impressed with this free delivery service! The guitar oarts look really good and seem to be of high quality. Snug fit between the neck and the body. That is pretty much all I can say at this point. I intend to provide more comments when it is built. From what I can tell so far, I believe this inexpensive “project” guitar will exceed my expectations. Another thing I would like to mention is that Matt from Solo has been very helpful and quick to respond to all my emails. Customer service is excellent! That’s it for now.

  2. Joseph (verified owner)

Well this was purchased as a gift from my wife, so I will not be assembling it for a few months, but the customer service and delivery was unbelievable. They kept me in the loop when they received the product, and I received it the day after I ordered it. Everything looks good, and I’m looking forward to assembly it, it’s going to be a beautiful ax to play.

  3. James Brooks (verified owner)

My guitar is not built yet but all looks good so far: sanding is coming along nicely. Wood seems to be of good quality as does all the hardware. Customer service is top notch, Matt replies to questions same day. I will send a photo when the project is complete.

I purchased a new kit last year and it is the best thing I could have done. I had a great experience building it. I am now waiting for a warlock or higher end jazz to come available. Thanks Solo
    Fred

So far so good. The delivery was quick. I sent an email to thank solo for the quick service and got a quick reply which tells me these guys care. I haven’t finished building it yet but everything looks okay and I’m looking forward to playing the finished product. I’ve been mentioning Solo gear to everyone I can mention you guys to. Thank you for being here in Canada. I really this company is doing well and continues providing these products. I’m really, really happy and excited with my purchase. When I’m finished this one I’ll probably get another one. It’s been a fun project so far. Cheers Solo gear and thank you guys.

This thing is more than what it looks that’s for sure, despite the single coils the tone matches my Gibson without a single flaw.

These kits are more surprising than anything I’ve played. Makes you wonder why everything else is so pricey

  7. Kevan (verified owner)

The kit was easy to assemble. I had my buddy do up the wiring though. The pickups are dead quiet and are actually pretty decent. The sound is rather airy probably due to the semi-hollow aspect I suppose. The neck pocket fit was ok, not perfect but within acceptable parameters. I’ve seen American tele’s with worse neck pocket gaps than this one. But the biggest feature of this guitar and site was the price. I checked around quite a bit and this was definitely a huge factor for me. I will definitely pick up another guitar from this company down the road.

    EXCELENT KIT OVERALL
i m pretty satisfyed with the result and the quality price ratio,NO MAJOR PROBLEM TO ASSEMBLE.
ONLY ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT WAS SOME GUIDELINES FOR VARNISHING?ALSO THE PICKGAUARD SCEWS WERE TWO DIFFERENT SIZEs,HAD TO BE CORRECTED.
    VERY good product

I was able to build a really nice playing guitar out of this kit. It was my first build and was excellent for self-educating myself from finishing all the way through to final assembly. I was absolutely shocked at how good this guitar sounded the first time I plugged it in. I did use a different bridge and modified the body for through body strings but used 100% of the included electronics. The neck was levelled but fretts needed polishing which was just all part of the valuable education. Maybe I will build a Bass next. I would recommend Solo as your source if you want to do it yourself.

    I enjoyed building this kit.
It went together quickly and easily.
The wiring was straight-forward and easy to complete.
The nut slot depth setup went quickly and gave the expected results – tuning and intonation went well.
The guitar is nice and light and easy to play.
I get surprising complements from it’s appealing appearance.
I just had no problems from start to finish and now I have a great looking, very playable “vintage” guitar that I can play “unplugged”.

So this is the only 5 star you will see for someone who doesn’t have a finished guitar to show for it!! for the money, you probably won’t find a better value, both in the kit’s construction and the lessons it lets you learn without blowing up your bank account.

First, the bad- I received the kit and it had sealer everywhere on the body and neck. No advice/instructions on how to get it off, so I grabbed a orbital sander and some 220 grit….went straight through the the sealer and then through the veneer….that was the first 30 minutes. Eventually, I sanded the rest smooth and painted it, only to put a crack in the face by the f hole…in my attempt to sand to a smooth surface, it got too thin. Don’t do what I did. 400 grit minimum with a block will save you heartache!!! I spoke to customer service and was informed that the tops that look more like fancy figured wood will come with no sealer so it can be dyed or hit with something translucent, but this particular model will still come with sealer…bummer for that but I’m going to give the prs style a go next time which I should have more luck with…fingers crossed!!!

Now the good stuff- the kit itself is great! Is it as good as a $3k t style custom shop? No, but if that’s what you want, go get it. For the rest of us hobbyists, a little technical ability, some tools and some spray cans will give you a very respectable guitar in a day or two. Go crazy and swap out the electronics and hardware if you really want to but they aren’t bad. I had to do very little fret leveling/polishing on the neck as well…I mean, I did it because I know how and have the tools, but I could have left it alone and sealed it up and been just fine.

Bottom line- fun project guitar. Yes, you can go buy something already assembled but you miss out on the learning…just try not to destroy it…but even if you do, it’s a lot easier to get over with the price tag where it is. At the end of it, you can learn really good lessons without too much penalty and to me, that’s priceless!!!

First of all I would like to say is that the delivery was prompt as advertised. Contents were in good condition and appeared in of a high quality. I envisioned building the guitar to resemble a 1968-69 Thinline Telecaster.

I used a light maple stain on the top and a light walnut stain on the sides and back. The wood absorbed the stain evenly. I finished it with five coats of Birchwood Casey Tru-Oil.

Assembly and instructions were straight forward. The neck was a bit “chunky”, took more sanding. The neck / body fit was tight but the neck angle was a little off and needed to be shimmed.

This was my first DIY kit and I was very happy with the quality of the kit and I will be buying another kit.

  13. rcolborne (verified owner)

Well I must say right from purchase, great service and delivery. No issues with shipping (live in the north) and very pleased with product. I gave the guitar a good once over and did basically a dry fit and checked all parts etc. I did find my three way switch was faulty and sent of a email, responded quickly and thanked me for the quick response. He had it in the mail to my door in three days, awesome. I decided to go “ode da natural” and did a simple tung oil on the body and clear coated the neck. I must say was impressed with the pickups, pretty closely matched. I cleaned up the fret edges, checked the neck and set the bridge to proper radius. I did give the frets a quick polish and took down a few high spots and all good. I going to change the pots and add a bleed on the volume and treble. She already had a wear spot on the neck, I’m so proud.

    Thanks, great product and service..

I will let SOLO team decided if they want to delete or keep my review.

I already purchase and assemble a total of five of this same guitar kit TCK-100
I believe this kit is one of the best kit in regards of quality wise and price.

Here is my opinion in regard of what you relay need to have to be able to assemble this guitar kit:
Some wiring and soldering knowledge and Intonation and string leveling understanding.

Before starting to assemble your guitar make a good visual inspection of the body, neck and parts (Look for damage, bad appearance spot or missing parts), if you have any question,, call the SOLO guitar personal, they will support you all the way. Thanks to the SOLO team in place.
The neck and body should have the same part number written on both)
    .
Here is my own personal 5 steps or sequences I always use to built this TCK-100 guitar:

My step 1: Trim all frets edges on the neck, they’re all a little too sharp for me, it might be uncomfortable for your inside hands (use a small file)file all of them, make them soft, take your time on each fret then install all your Tuning Machines
*you don’t install the guitar neck to the body yet at this sequence.

My step 2: Start your wiring installation and soldering process on your white cover and guitar body ; installation of all hardware, pickups, pots) tight all final to the guitar body.
*you don’t install the guitar neck to the body yet at this sequence.

My step 3: Assemble the neck to the body (Tight the neck in place using the star crossing tighten process for the 4 screws)

My step 4: You can install the string from the kit but me, I use Fender .009/.042 diameter string gage (install the two neck plate on the front head located the best you can).

My step 5: Do the neck adjustment, string leveling and guitar intonation. ( File as well the Allen nuts if its too sharps for your hands at saddle location)
And that’s it!! you have your Thinline semi-hollow body guitar TCK-100

With the first kit I received, there was too much wiggle in the neck pocket when I dry fitted the neck in. But Solo Customer Service is top notch. I called them and they sent a new kit out, no questions asked, with a shipping label to send the first one back to them. The second kits’ neck to neck pocket fits much better. I haven’t started building it yet due to weather because I’ll need to work outside. I intend to Tru-oil the body without any stain, or I might add a light color stain; haven’t decided yet. But I can start work on the neck. Neck feels good and is pretty straight. Body is in perfect shape, just needs the normal sanding procedure. Strings are crap but that’s to be expected. I’ll put a set of Ernie Ball nines on it when it’s done. This is my first kit and I’m really looking forward to the process. If all goes well, I’ll go for a Les Paul model next time. I have found, from my experience and others, you can’t go wrong with buying a kit from Solo.

  16. jimsa1971 (verified owner)

Out of the box it’s playable without much work, but if you want it to be a quality instrument it will take some work. I leveled, crowned and polished the frets as well as replacing the nut. The original nut is plastic and was not cut very well(the first few frets all went slightly sharp). I also upgraded to some locking tuners, the originals were good, I just prefer locking tuners. After a few hours worth of work on the frets and a 10 dollar Tusqxl nut, it plays like a dream.

  17. ron.vaillancourt (verified owner)

This is my 3rd kit from solo and this is my favorite so far. The guitar plays and sounds great, the only thing that kept it from being a 5 star rating was the fit of the neck to the body. Felt really loose and even now there is a gap between the body and the neck however it does not appear to be impacting playabitlity at this time.

The gap is about the width of a business card or guitar pick on either side and this is a cosmetic issue only. But as stated previously guitar is playing great at this time and maybe not a big deal to others if you can live with the slight gap.

  18. olsongregoryg (verified owner)

This guitar kit is awesome. Everything fit together well and it sounds great. I run it through my fender blues junior and the cleans are crisp.

  19. homme_de_fer3

Bought the kit back in October and took my time putting it together. I experimented with different paints on a scrap of wood for about a month before deciding on purple flake over black.
I had a few little missing parts but Solo replaced them without a fuss. And while on the subject, I have to mention that they provide great support so you don’t have to worry about issues with wiring or setup.
Anyhow, after paint, the kit came together nicely. Just remember, you need to fiddle with the neck angle to get it right; this required me taking it off a few times and adding shims. After that, a few adjustments with the truss rod, and it was alive!
I still have a little work to do with the truss rod and I need to play with the frets a bit to get the action a little lower, but as it sits right now, it plays as well as any Squire.

Shipment arrived promptly, neck to body fit is excellent. Only issue was broken magnet on neck pickup, i have been told that they will send a replacement. Otherwise very satisfied. Fun project to build.

Fantastic value. All parts met or surpassed expectations. I will definitely order from solo again.

  22. bigugly.td (verified owner)

First time even soldering, let alone building a guitar. When I ran into an issue, or had any questions, Customer Support was extremely patient and helpful. Although I’ll be upgrading the strings and electrics, the ones in the box sound good enough for my entry level play.

I recently finished construction of the TCK-100 guitar kit. This was my second build of a Solo Guitar kit; the first one being the PRK-1.

Since I am a huge fan of Tab Benoit, I wanted to modify the kit to give a tip of the hat to the Thinline that Tab plays. Instead of going with two humbuckers like his guitar, I opted to replace the neck pickup with a Fender Deluxe Wide-Range humbucker, and leave the single-coil bridge pickup in place. That way, I could have the best of both worlds. Making this swap required me to router out the cavity, which was certainly a challenge.

In addition to modifying the guitar body to accept the Fender humbucker, I had to swap out the pick guard to not only accommodate the pickup, but also the new classic 3-way switch that I wanted. To facilitate this process, I built my own router template. And since I didn’t like the way it looks to poke the strings into the back of the bridge plate, I drilled six holes through the body and installed string ferrules on the back side. I also swapped out the plastic nut for a Tusq nut.

The guitar color was developed using powdered dye from Keda Dye out of Manitowoc, Wisconsin. I mixed up a deep reddish brown for the base color of the body, and then applied a black “burst” around the perimeter of the top. The cream-colored binding of the Solo kit really helps the brown and black pop. Originally, I attempted to use conventional wood stain, but it looked so bad I sanded it all off and went back to the powdered dye from Keda. It was time well-spent. I was nervous that I couldn’t mix my own colors, but those fears were unfounded. In the future, I will only use aniline dye on my guitar build projects. Both the neck (left natural) and body were finished with about a dozen coats of Tru-Oil from Birchwood Casey, which provides a “killer” finish. Once the Tru-Oil was fully cured, I hand polished the neck and body and then applied Birchwood Casey Gunstock Wax for a brilliant shine.

When finished, the guitar looked great, but this isn’t just an art project. The real proof is in the playing, and this guitar does not disappoint. I really took my time in setting up the string action and intonation. Between the single coil and the Fender humbucker, this thing can run the gamut from twangy bite to silky smooth tones. And the Tusq nut provides great tone and sustain; and I didn’t even have to modify the string slots.

I have to mention the help that Padraig gave me when it came time to wire up the electronics. I am having a ton of fun playing my new Thinline guitar. Thanks Solo.

I just finished my TCK-100 thinline style kit and thought I’d share my impressions. Body and neck very nice – surprisingly good fretwork, no sharp edges only a couple of high frets, nicely straight neck. All of the body routs are lined with copper tape as in the pickguard. I finished it with TransTint amber maple and TruOil on neck and body, polished out after a 3 week drying period. It went together without a fight and I’m happy with the result.

There were a few bumps along the way:
    1. Its hard to tell when you have sanded far enough to be through the sealer, especially on the maple veneer top
    2. The wiring diagram is not an accurate depiction of the wiring harness provided (I wrote several emails about this and disappointingly, the only response I received was a request to resend the email). In addition, the instructions refer to a ground wire but there isn’t one in the kit
    3. No holes drilled for string trees (not a giant problem but getting the placement just right is a bit tricky)
    4. While the instructions say to attach the neck before installing the pick guard, that makes installing the pickguard impossible – attach the neck last.
    5. Chrome peeled from the bridge plate the moment it was installed

All in all, a really satisfying project. Everything fit as it should and the finished product plays fine. Not surprisingly, the pickups are harsh and the pots are minimal. As well as it plays though, I’m going to replace both, as well as the peeling bridge plate. Then it’s on to the next project – a solo SG.
